Musical Theatre and Buisness

Hey, so this is my first time posting on this site, but I need some advice. So I really want to major in Musical Theatre and go on Broadway (huge dream I know), but I don't know if I should double major. I also love directing, as well as performing, and I think that producing a show would be fun. Is majoring in business worth it if I was thinking of producing? I'm pretty sure that OCU offers a double major. Just want some input.

You would be better served by posting this in the Musical Theatre Forum (you’re in the Music Major forum right now). If you want some answers re. the directing, take a look at the Drama/Acting Forum too. I do happen to know a bit about some of this, though, so I’ll add my two cents,
As for OCU, they have a major in Music Performance with some business courses, but that is NOT the same as MT at all:
[Oklahoma City University : Bass School of Music : Degree Programs](http://www.okcu.edu/music/BM_business.aspx)
And they also have a school of Dance&Arts Management-(Entertainment Business Program)
[Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management](http://www.okcu.edu/Dance_amgt/)
Many young people do major in MT, but know that very, very few of those are able to support themselves by performing within that field, and more colleges are adding an MT major to their programs simply because it is viewed as a “cash cow”- in other words, some kids want it so badly that they are willing to try almost any school, even if it is non-audition based. That’s why I’m suggesting that you head on over to the MT Forum, read about the different schools (there is a list with links there) and post your questions.
You sound young, early years in HS? If you are really serious about MT, you are going to have to focus a lot more and choose which areas really interest you and which you realistically stand a chance in. Meanwhile, gain all the experience you can by participating in shows in school and in your community. Get some stage-time in and then, possibly look at student-directing a show if your school will permit that. Producing is something FAR in the future-many years away, and one no longer produces a show alone. Take a look at the upcoming revival of “Ragtime” on Broadway; there are SEVENTEEN producers, and it’s a revival of a proven hit!! Producing is about money, who you know and schmoozing friends, business contacts and your ancient, great-aunt Tilly, to see how much money they all have to toss into the pot. If that interests you, by all means, take some business courses (which are good even if you intend to perform, because then you can make sure your agent is really working for YOU!); you might even be able to take some dual-credit courses through a connection your HS has with a local college. OK, I’m finished- go over to the other Forum and Good Luck!

I’ve asked the moderators to move this thread to the MT forum.

Thank you violadad. All done.
