@MTdreamin makes an important point. Get past the name (prestige) and look at the actual curriculum. Is it acting heavy, dance heavy, singing heavy? Which is more important to you? All of these programs are very good. Make sure they’re good for you.
An example I think about is UNCSA. When asked about dancing at the info session, the director stated something along the lines of, “If you are already a pretty strong dancer, we’ll make you Broadway leading actor ready. If you’re not already strong, you won’t be in a chorus line or Broadway ensemble but you’ll learn to move better than you can now.”
Pretty honest assessment. So if you were looking to focus on dance, or want dance heavy programming, probably not the school for you…BUT they are a GREAT school / program.
Depends on what you want/need.
I had a daughter who was a top dancer and I know they have an impeccable dance program there at University of Arizona. Maybe the musical theatre program isn’t allowed to be in same classes with the dance program? And so they don’t get the rigor like the dance majors do??? Because I know the dance program is an elite national program.
UofA is top notch dance. I’m sure the musical theatre dance teachers are top notch as well. The dance majors just can’t have the MT majors tripping up in their classes! ?
Exactly. My daughter had a voice lesson with her and in the first five minutes, ms. Hopkins bluntly told her something wasn’t right and told her a way to fix it and in less than 10 minutes, my daughter had fixed a problem with her singing that she had had forever. She really liked her and wants to go there now. My daughter loved the analysis and feedback. As a girl in MT, you need people to give you blunt feedback because it is way more cutthroat than for a boy.
My D is choosing between MMC, MSM, and Rider. Any thoughts positive or negative? Would love any information or thoughts to help us guide her along this process. Thank you in advance.
@bfayay RE: Utah vs. Molloy/CAP21. I don’t think I saw anyone engage on your question. We did not look at the UT program and as some may know, I have a kid at Molloy/CAP21 so my knowledge is pretty lopsided. I would guess that the programs are somewhat different given that Molloy is different than a lot of programs given the dual location and the way they focus their performance opportunities around training/projects and collaborative/new works. I think there are a few variables you could look at:
-
Look at the programs side by side - possibly with the name removed from the curriculums. Does either program speak more to your student?
-
Location - these are very different.
-
How does your student feel about the commute given the dual location? For us, the commute, while not the most fun thing in the world, was workable and gave “the best of both worlds” in terms of college campus and city training.
-
Overall feel/vibe. Based on what you can learn via online forums, discussions with faculty/program representatives, current students, and if possible - visits - where does your student feel at home?
-
Costs - Financials may or may not be your top priority, but worth a comparison
Best of luck deciding!
