Musical Theatre Major

Okay so I love MT and I have really been torn between majoring in that or acting because I didn't want to sacrifice my education in acting but I also didn't want to lose voice and dance training that I would get in an MT program. Finally, I decided on MT (I have already put this on the applications I have submitted). I just started seeing a vocal coach (honestly because my family hasn't been able to afford it and I just didn't have time in my ridiculously busy schedule), and she said that because of my lack of technique a MT program would be "ambitious" to take me. I have a really unique tonal quality and I'm an extremely hard worker. I'm working my audition songs to the bone, but I am nervous that they won't be good enough. I have above average grades (by no means spectacular) and a strong dance and acting background (although I haven't danced in a year or so, also for scheduling and financial reasons).

Basically, now I'm just really nervous about my auditions! I am so passionate about musical theatre and the reason I chose to major in it was because I wanted to become a better singer and dancer..But now I'm afraid that I will be rejected from MT and unable to major in acting because of my poor technique.

I'm auditioning at Emerson, VCU (not for MT, just BFA in Theatre), JMU, Marymount Manhattan (Acting with minor in MT), and possibly DePaul or University of Chicago.

I am not sure about the other schools, but at JMU you will be given the opportunity to check on your audition form if you would also like to be considered for the Theatre Program (where students have the opportunity to declare an acting track in their sophomore year). All students cal audition for musicals, there are voice classes for non-MT concentrators, and you can take dance, and musical theatre classes if space is available… so either way you can continue acting and MT training. VCU is a BFA Theatre program (as you know) where you will have the opportunity to audition or musicals, and take some musical theatre performance classes, dance, etc…

I would assume that at Marymount that a student could be admitted for the acting program even if not admitted for the MT minor…

I know it is hard, but try not to worry… keep doing what you are doing.

Do you also have a non-auditioned academic and financial safety school on your list that you are excited about? This is a good idea for everyone, and can take some of the pressure off.

:)
