Heyyy. This is in a couple of weeks. What does this holiday represent?

here's the story:

The prophet Abraham (or Ibrahim, as it's pronunced in arabic) was ordered, in his sleep, by God to slaughter his own son, as a test of his loyalty to Him. Abraham told his son, Ismail, of his dream and Ismail, truly loyal to his god, agreed without protest.
On the day of the slaughtering, before the blade would strike the boy's neck, Abraham recieved a "pardon" from God as a reward for his loyalty, abd sent down a sheep from heaven to be slaughtered instead of Ismail.
Ever since, Muslims have been slaughtering sheep once a year as a sort of recognition of the sacrifice that Abraham was willing to make for his people, and the mercy and wisdom that God showed upon Muslims.

So, why do Muslims "celebrate" this occasion? Like, I understand the mercy of God is showered upon us, and we observe the occasion by slaughtering animals..sheep,cows, goats, camels..etc.. Would you just clarify a bit, that what gives people more reason to observe this occasion and why just Muslims only observe Prophet Abraham's sacrifice? (u know what I'm trying to refer to!)

emmm....I was referring to Hajj dude...like, I know Hajj is just part of the act done in memory of Prophet Abraham and then also Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them), but, it's a VERY SIGNIFICANT PART! VERY! :)

It's not as significant as you think. Hajj is not directly related to Eid Al Adha.

As you already know, Abraham's second wife, Hagar, walked around the two mountains Al-Safa and Al-Marwa seven times, in search for water for her baby. Which was also a test from God, after which she was rewarded by the Zamzam spring bursting out of nowhere.
Anyway, her story has nothing to do with the sheep story.
Also, the Ka'aba, ramy ul-gamarat, etc...are all rituals related to Hajj, and not to Eid Al Adha.

I agree Zamzam story has nothing to do with sheep story (more as in has no causation/effect due to sheep story) BUT, here is what I'm saying....you were answering a NON-MUSLIM dude! And, she needs to know that Hajj is VERY SIGNIFICANT action done at the very time the Eid-ul-Azha takes place! Emm...here's a stupid analogy I can think of now, for instance, when you are talking about Christmas, you are not just going to say about Jesus Christ but also about Santa Claus.....emm....well, uh...it'll get complicated to explain, since I don't have a lot of knowledge on Santa Claus. But definitely Santa Claus is an important part of Christmas, however, he IS not the cause of Christmas at the first place, rather became the ritual.

I know Hajj was NOT the cause of Eid ul Adha, but definitely, if you just browse online a bit, you will NOT find any reference to Eid ul Adha without information on Hajj...and now, Hajj indeed became a part of Eid ul Adha..........not as in it was part of it originally, but, got related....uh, I am not totally confident about whether Hajj was NOT part of the celebration of Eid ul Adha though...but, well, i will ask around.

Sheed..........so, what's wrong about arguing religion? It's rather better to argue about religion and come to points rather than loooking at arguing (or as in "discussing" abt Islam) as a sin or something (apparently which isn't the case). lol.

You guys can email each other. This is a college forum, not a religious one. And no-one (especially muslims) will really change their views on islam based on some person's ideas. So, there's no point. Let's just be happy it's almost Eid :D

You see it's not like a really big idea! It's rather factual idea! There isn't much to change. The way you said it, it looked as if, each of us are trying to "convince" each other in a "persuading" and "forceful" way! Debate is TOTALLY Acceptable in Islam dude! As in, if it removes confusion. If you truly follow a religion, you should logically be open to debates, and confusions, and you should be willing to argue, since this is the way how you'd get your answers! (not you as in You, but as in one! lol.)

So, there's every point! You said it more in a way like, "we don't need to know what the government is doing, we can't make any changes, so, let's enjoy the ...emm...(insert something you'd wanna enjoy)." syn: apathy.

I knew you'd think I'm like really trying to really make my points by these posts! I'm just saying the facts! I'm sorry if it sounds kinda like harsh and disrespective or something! I think you said something like "let's not argue about religion"...so, anyway...forget it...;)
