Muslims?

Do they exist? This is the only factor stopping me from sending in my deposit. I am Muslim. I'd like to think of myself as an activist. I do interfaith work and do plan on doing many different activities on campus (a capella, improv, Habitat, etc.). I'm not boxing myself in or self-segregating. I do, however, want/need a support system on campus for my faith and do not really want to be the "face of Islam" for another four years.

Are there Muslims on campus? Do people "see" them? Or are the considered "weird" or do they closet their faith? Is their interaction between them and the rest of the community? Are there fast-a-thons? Interesting lectures on hot topics regarding Islam? Is the campus cultured to other faiths or ignorant?

For finalist weekend, we were taken to a African film festival and one of the two movies shown (regarding the Kenyan bombings) was so outrageously offensive, ignorant, typical Hollywood propaganda-ish that I was shocked.
A few other students (non-Muslim) were equally dismayed, however, I heard others saying it was "a really good" movie. I would expect that from your typical middle-aged, uneducated adult but to hear that from someone with the intellectual capacity/free-thinking ability to get into WashU was disapointing.

I'd like to attend WashU and this is honestly my only concern about coming to WashU so anyone would could discuss it with facts or experience would be VERY much appreciated.

I don’t go to WashU but their website says they have a MSA

There are definitely muslims at washU. I met at least 2 devout muslims who are going there when I visited a couple weeks ago. we even stumbled upon a muslim prayer room in one of the dorms.

Honestly, we see “intelligent” people be in positions of power like certain people we see at the top of the government. They’re intelligent, they’re charismatic, and they’re bigoted.

Don’t worry about them.

There are fastathons, an islamic awareness week per semester, and various other scattered events through the year… We get the funding but need more manpower. The are very few practicing muslims at the WashU campus compared other campuses but I guess you could say we are a close knit group.

The one thing you will find though is that although there is a lack of practicing muslims, there sure isn’t a lack of discussion about islam and muslims. There’s a decent islamic studies program here, and I do remember reading about some lecture series about islam.

With any campus you will have ignorance… and WashU is definitely no exception.
