Must Do-& Don'ts-->A guide to Florida State

Alright so I was sitting around, just reliving my last 3 years in college and how fast it went by, next year I'll be a senior, and hopefully get accepted into Grad school. But as an incoming freshman I tried to read all those college guides to see and understand how college would be, and lord have mercy were they wrong.

So with my intricate knowledge of college life, I hope to try and provide a guide from a real student perspective and from a person who has seen the ups and downs of the Florida State University.

SO I hope you guys like it.

To start—> Pre college

1;Take High school seriously, even your senior year, many students after being accepted into the college they want to attend completely slack off and forget that admission can be revoked due to poor performance or other events. Furthermore it is very important to continue to do well in school inorder to obtain scholarships, jobs, internships, I still have to provide high school transcripts and im already a junior in college…So the message is to not slack off because you think your done. Always do your best trust me, itll help you out in the long run.

2;Money Money Money- I cant stress money as being important. Granted im sure many of your parents will probably support you and provide some sort of financial help, please try and conserve money even before going away. College is very expensive and you MUST learn how to budget your money. So start in high school, try and spend and prioritize your expenses now.

Next> Going to College

So you’ve graduated high school, hopefully you had a summer job (money), and hopefully you’ve matured a bit because this is no longer the hand holding and coddling that is k-12 your now on your own and its up to you to be self motivated.

DO!!!

-get all medical documents, checkups, and medicines in order, the most important thing is your health, many people forget to live a healthy life, eat right, exercise, etc. These four years will have an impact on your health for the rest of your life, many people have a tendency to get addicted to things while in college
-try and contact your roomate, while many of you guys will be coming in with high school friends and girlfriends, this is the person you will be living with for a certain amount of time. So try and establish a connection. Furthermore discuss what each of you is bringing up, example tv,microwave, lamps, alarm clocks- discuss sleeping habits, studying (this things will change though as you get used to college life).

 • Pride, pride, pride- while you may not have liked your high school sports teams, and they probably sucked…We LOVE florida state, we root for the seminoles at everything, and we feel like our school is the best at everything, so get in the spearIT, AND HATE THE GAYTORS.

DONT!!
-just hang out with your friends from high school, this is new place, beside the education you get here, the connections can be the most important thing you gain from college, thanks to my fraternity many of my brothers have been hired for great jobs, all because of the people we know.
-Dont bring your entire life with you to college, dont bring your blankie from when you were two, or your stuffed teddy bears etc. bring what you consider necessary, and then reduce that, remember you’ll be moving constantly while in college and that makes it difficult to have alot of stuff.
-While its fine to visit your parents and go home, dont do it every weekend, you will never makes long lasting friends if you go home every weekend. I did this freshman year and I regret it, I had a long distance relationship and every weekend I went home to see her, before I knew it I still felt like I was in high school because I was still doing the same stuff, grow up your in college now, you only have four years, learn to love florida state.

MORE TO COME TOMORROW!!

Good work! Keep it coming. :)

this is great =]

Great posts FSUFratStar.

“- Pride, pride, pride- while you may not have liked your high school sports teams, and they probably sucked…We LOVE florida state, we root for the seminoles at everything, and we feel like our school is the best at everything, so get in the spearIT, AND HATE THE GAYTORS.”

That is especially true. If you are wearing Gaytors **** on our campus, I will personally have something to say to you.

^ What about “Gay turds?” not saying I’m planning on wearing one… >_>

God I really hate all the people wearing gators crap on campus, WHERE DO YOU GO TO COLLEGE?

Oh yeah FSU, have some pride in your school and just go to whatever community College is in Gainesville if you want to be that close to UF

Keep the thread on a relevant topic guys.

Good point.

-Rate my professors, a lot of people don’t understand how important it is to choose the right professors it makes the difference between an A and a B in the same class, while its important to choose a good schedule based on time, remember your gpa is very important, so don’t risk it with a really hard professor, also check the student evaluations at fsu sussai.

-Time, time, time, schedule your classes at appropriate times, look everyone comes into college thinking that classes starting at 9 are perfect because they used to get up for high school at 7, so they think that nine am is perfect, well I can almost guarantee that most nights you will not go to bed before 1 in the morning, so try and pick later classes in order to avoid sleeping in or missing your classes. Granted that its not always possible but when given the chance try and get Later classes, trust me you will regret it if you don’t.

-Shop around for your textbook, many people just go to the bookstore and get gouged by the exorbitant price of the books, whereas if they would search on ebay or any website they would pay a lot less. Also don’t buy your books until after the first day of class, wait until the professor tells you whether you will use it or not…Furthermore take advantage of the new rental system, alot of students prefer this as you pay less than half the amount of the purchase price to rent it for the semester.
