Hey everyone,
I just got back from Rhodes Preview Day and was seriously impressed. I had thought I had decided not to go to Rhodes, but the visit made all the difference in the world. So I thought I'd give my observations and see if anyone concurs.

First of all, Rhodes is BEAUTIFUL! The campus is pristine, gorgeous, and everything I believe college is supposed to be. The area around the campus is also Really really nice and I never felt uncomfortable. The houses are nice and well taken care of.

Second, the people were friendly and talkative. They were also really nice, smart, and on average, good looking! haha.

Third, the food at the Rat and the Lair was good but the whole food plan/what you can get at the lair, was confusing.

Fourth, the Search and Life courses sound Fantastic. But I didn't get to hear much about other courses and professors. So if someone could comment on the quality of teaching ESPECIALLY in the non-scientific/mathmatic fields, I'd appreciate it.

Finally, the dorms, great, nice, clean. Pretty big by most standards. The architecture of the buildings was fantastic! And Williford really is like a maze! haha

I liked Rhodes ALOT and depending on the scholarship appeal, I might be a 2013 Lynx.

Hi! So glad that you had a wonderful experience at Rhodes–I have been here for four years now and am about to graduate, but have loved every minute of it! It has been such a great school for me and I have enjoyed my time here so much, so of course I completely agree with your analysis of the college. The meal plan isn’t as difficult to figure out as what it seems (thankfully!)–if you are a freshman you can choose between the 15 or 21 meals per week, which applies to the Lair and the Rat. At the Rat you swipe your meal card and have all-you-can-eat of everything there (including a great selection of frozen yogurt and ice cream). At the Lair, you can use your meal plan to buy food, like made-to-order sandwiches, pizzas, etc, but it is not all-you-can-eat and sometimes you will need to use “Lynx bucks” to cover an extra 50 cents here or there. Rhodes gives students an allowance of Lynx bucks each semester–it around $80, which can be used at the Middle Ground coffee shop or for supplementary items at the Lair (i.e. if you want a candy bar or something else not included on the meal plan). Hope that helps to clarify.

Also, I really loved my Search course at Rhodes–I had a phenomenal professor, made lots of friends in class and learned so much from the course material. As for the math department and their courses, I am not of much help since I am a Literature/Art History major, but I do know Prof. Gottlieb, who is the Chair of the Math Department. He is an amazing professor by all standards and is very engaged with his students as well as with his own research–in fact, he recently received a Fulbright Fellowship, with which he decided to teach Calculus, in Spanish, in Chile.

Hope that you continue to visit Rhodes–I have really loved my time here!
KO

PS I lived in Williford as a freshman–great dorm but I still get lost in there! Always an adventure.

how do we end up getting the Lynx Bucks…??

Hi! You automatically receive a set amount of Lynx bucks per semester at Rhodes (it is around $70-$80 I believe). If you manage to run out of that base amount that is automatically on your Lynx student ID card than you can go online and add more Lynx bucks to your card through you banking/checking. Parents can also load lynx bucks on the card for you, which is always nice!
