So I am a junior in high school and we are a quarter into school. My english teacher has literally taught us nothing that will be be on the Ap test. I keep hearing about my friends who have a different teacher who is the best of the best...and we have learned NOTHING of what they are learning. I am excellent in English and it is my most advanced subject. I got advanced on the PSAT and all other english subject tests I have ever taken. I definitely have a knack for it. However, I have no idea how to write rhetorically or use any of the devices. I looked through the study book and have no idea what most of the words that are questioned about mean, such as paradox, etc...How do I practice these and also what else should I cover? I am going to attempt to self study using the Princeton Review Ap Lang book but what are the other ways to help me pass the exam?!
p.s. thanks for any helpful comments and for reading this :)

will someone pleaaaasssseee reply?

I’m currently a senior. I took AP Lang last year; my teacher was a first-time AP Lang teacher, although having taught English classes for more than 20 years. Granted, I can’t say she did a really good job with the class…We wasted a lot of the year doing things like debates and analyzing rhetoric in movies and music, which really didn’t help with the AP test at all.
I got a 5 anyway, and this was in no way due to my teacher’s efforts. I’ve always been solid in English, and was fairly certain I was going to get a 5 when we took our first practice AP Lang test during class last year (which only happened midway through second semester).
Since you’ve shown strength in English subject tests before, I wouldn’t worry much about it. The essay portion of the AP Lang test is probably the easiest part. Study some common rhetorical techniques and follow basic 5-paragraph essay structures if you’ find yourself a tough spot. Just support everything you say. You really only need to know what rhetorical techniques are for one of the essays (the analysis one). Have you learned about ethos, pathos, and logos yet? Just using those as your thesis statement for the analysis essay will do. The other essays are fairly straight forward: just support, support, support.
The multiple choice is definitely the hardest part about the AP Lang test, especially if you are not a decent reader. You don’t have much time, so if you’re a slow reader, read the questions first then look for the answers in the passage. Do a lot of practice problems. Go hit Barnes and Nobles and get a book of 500 AP Lang questions or something and do them. That’s really all you can do, practice, practice. Good luck!

Thankyou soooo much for your reply! It made me feel a lot better:) We’ve briefly covered logos ethos and pathos, but I’m going to continue to self study them so i can apply them to actual literature. My teacher gave me a list of rhetorical devices, so I think that’s what I’m going to study the most.
