My boss never submitted my optional rec letter

I know college decisions are out already, but a few of the schools I was confident about did not go how I expected. Over the summer I did an internship with a doctor. Every summer she picks two interns and at the end of it writes them a letter, but I still asked her formally to be sure. I checked in with her several times, but she just never submitted it, even though she told me she’d be happy to and that I was one of the best interns she’d ever had. She even threw me a going away party and got me a gift card. Eventually I removed her from my recommenders, but only in February because I heard that colleges still accept late materials. Does anybody know if colleges saw this, and if so if it hurt my chances? I just want to know if I’m right to be very upset with her.

Did you remind her to send it in?

@TomSrOfBoston yes several times and each time she assured me she was going to do it soon

Unlikely that one supplemental LOR about an internship would change an admission decision. But in any event, there is nothing you can do about it now so its time to move on.

My question was more if colleges can see a recommender that has been assigned but who hasn´t submitted it yet. I have heard that if you don´t have a recommendation from an internship it can seem fake or like something did not go well. For the colleges I applied to I do feel that something as small as that could make a difference.

Spilled milk, my friend. The doctor didn’t follow through and there isnt anything you can do now. Don’t burn bridges. That doctor might be needed as a job reference in the near future.

I don’t believe that colleges see recommenders that aren’t assigned but you can ask your guidance counselor if you need to find out so desperately. Some people get extra recommendations and send different LORs to different colleges based on their requirements (ex. one school may want a humanities and a STEM teacher and another may not care so an applicant may send two STEM teachers or something like that).

Personally I’d drop it and move on as noted above.
