btw, GPA for 11th grade is probably 4.0uw/4.2-3? w. My school doesn’t provide class rank since there’s only 50 or a few more students in my class.

yes, another korean female.
psh4897. I hope u’re reading this.

hey what are you talking about. you have a good chance. As you said, your not-so-stellar EC does worry me a bit, but we’ll see how it goes. Your CR score sorta worries me too. But, I think you have a better chance of getting in that not.

And also even if your school doesn’t rank, they’re gonna see your GPA in context of the secondary school info form. So, knowing the GPA of last year’s valedictorian might help.

And remember that you’re a female applying ED. That’s a very big boost

I’m hoping, if they made 2 acceptances from koreans in ed1, that indicates they’ll accept more koreans than usual this year? I don’t know if they actually have a limit on the number of students per country for internationals, but statistics-wise :/

Thanks for the comment btw I really hope for that interesting scene at HMC.

I’ve been staring at this post for too long lol

First of all, congrats on your SAT II and I think the college will like that you have improved your SAT scores (I’m jealous lol).

Anyway, like Maruhan, I am not sure about your EC, they seem really parochial, unless your service trips include building houses in Mexico or something like that… One thing I’ve noticed is your AP classes… you’re really strong in math and science but you seem to have neglected history and English… I’m not sure whether they would like that.

Your situation does make you unique and explains why you don’t have as much EC as you should. I’m not sure whether your Eng skills before your arrival to US were good enough (fluent) already, then maybe you will be able to explain why you weren’t able to focus on English as much.

And yeah, GPA would help. Essays, I’m not sure what “good” is. I think this is a good time for you to brag… did you love your essays?

I’m sorry if I misinterpreted any information. Maybe private schools work differently. I’m also an Asian female (US citizen) who applied ED2. Maybe you will chance me later. We’ll see I really hope that ED boost is real!

The service trips were to Costa Rica and helped to fix some of the facilities at one of the local schools in a small town.

I know I neglected humanity courses which are big deals at HMC. I really really really wanted to take all the science APs available and had to complete my graduation requirements at the same time - which are some electives, English, World History II. (usually for 9th/10th grade) The school actually recommended not taking any language courses, which I am concerned about :(

I’d give 8.5ish out of 10 for my essay. I had to shorten it (went over 1000 words on the drafts)

Cool! I’ve never had the opportunity to go to these places because usually they’re with the church…

Yeah, I guess you really couldn’t help it though… did you explain this in the additional essay area (common app) or did you tie it into your mudd supplement essays? Why did you do the “:/” face? I hope you didn’t shorten anything too important D:

I have been having minor panic attacks haha, I can’t stand the thought of them reading my application right now and making me wait until Feb! >.<

It was service trips from school actually. many volunteer for the trip (about 20 students per trip, but considering the size of the school it’s a big number) Awesome experience. Although I don’t speak spanish at all, I enjoyed it there and was actually able to communicate ! Body language is universal, you know, lol. Especially loved the food there :)

Well, I just liked the longer version of my essay, that’s all.

I can’t believe there’s more than a month left until the notification ! arghhhhhh I can’t wait for such a long period of time !!! already hitting bottom of my patience

Haha, thanks. Hopefully HMC knows it too Sometimes I miss good old days lol. Only sometimes though. Much prefer to study math and science in US than in Korea.

Hmm I do actually miss the feeling of learning “in advance”
As you age, you are less likely to go to hakwons. You look for private lessons rather, for more flexible schedules and other advantages.

Really, I doubt there are limits, so don’t worry about that. My year there are two people from Singapore, but the previous year none matriculated (one accepted, I think)

I think you’re a competitive candidate, but I’m not a HMC admissions officer so I wouldn’t know. Good luck!

well, the “in advance” part is not what I miss

I just miss studying with the group of kids who love science, math, or english and are really good at them.
Private lessons are booooooorrrrrrrrrriiiiinngggg.

Actually I prefer them over hakwons. Maybe like a group of three to five kids who actually do study. much more efficient, faster. I hated it when those slackers at hakwons that I don’t even know make noises and ask time-wasting questions that teachers already went over. ugh=_=
