I applied ED to Conncoll, but I wonder if my less-than-perfect stats can lead to deferral? Is there any chance I'm accepted?
Could you give me some advice about this:
Profile Asian Male
GPA : 8.5 / 10, 5% class
TOEFL : 607 PBT
SAT Low Gonna have to retake this in JAN ( But I asked the college to disregard it) ( they're SAT optional, right? )
SAT II: 750 Math 740 French 630 Physics
ECs:
Have a published work in sociology
Several city contest for gifted students prizes
Tutor for 1 year poor children.
Varsity sports: Football and Basketball ( 3 years )
Pass the French Baccaleaureat Program, nice marks
Speak 3 languages fluently
High School Debater

Dad and Mom: PhDs
Essays : The best stuff I've ever written
Recommendations: Great!
Question: What are my chances?
Intended Major: Sociology

I think you have a great chance at conncoll, especially ed, as for the other top LACs, some are going to be harder such as williams/amherst

things that help you: asian applying for sociology, good essays, varsity sports
things that hurt you: international (i'm assuming bc you tookt he toefl), gpa on the low side

overall, i think you'll have several options from the LACs

Thanks a lot, ky9742.
I do not intend to apply to Williams or Amherst though. I send my files to Bates, Colby, St Lawrence, Sarah Lawrence, Middlebury, Berea.
By the way, I suppose you might not know much about GPA in my country. 8.5/10 and top 5% class is not that low. Regarding this stuff, my counselor clearly wrote some explanations for the adcoms.
Please, anyone, give me some more ideas.
Thanks in advance.

I assume they'll look at an 8.5 as an 85, which translates into a B. Your rank is nice though.

I think you have a good chance at Lawrence, Colby and Bard & Bates and Middlebury will be low reaches. Since you're applying to some SAT optional schools, they'll weigh your GPA much more heavily, which might not be the best thing (not that its bad, its just not stellar)

in foreign countries, gpas are very different. they are really not comparable to grades in this country, seeing the rampant grade inflation here.

bronbron- you should be fine. the big negative is that it looks like you have a B average, and most applicants have an A-/A average. however:
-top 5%
-asian male
-good SAT II scores (SAT I is optional)
-active in school/community
-internationally oriented (conn loves that)

i think you'll get in. good luck! its a wonderful school.

Thanks again, Huskem55 and for everyone's hospitality to my case hehe :). Again, I want to mention that my GPA is not that low, and in my country, hardly anyone got like 9.0/10.
