Essays: I showed my essays to about 10 teachers and they all said they were "fantastic" and one even cried, so I guess this is a good sign? :)

Recommendation:
1. I'm sure that my first teacher gave me a great recommendation because I'm her teacher assistant
2. I'm sure my counselor gave me a great recommendation because he is a teacher leader of a club that I am a president in. (that's a really awk sentence sorry)
3. I'm not sure about my third teacher.............. ... .. .. . .:( I'm not sure if he remembers me. I don't know why I picked him...my counselor urged me to!!

Interview:
1. I thought my interview was great. It was really casual and I had no unexpected questions. She told me I had a lot of interests that somehow intermingle to for a quality that is great for a hotelier. She sent me an email wishing me luck and told me to inform her when the result comes out.
2. But....I forgot to meet a requirement (I'm so stupid i"m sorry) I don't know why I missed it but math 2 subject test was a requirement and I didn't take the test. So when I got the email from cornell, I freaked out and asked my interviewer for help. Do you think this will hurt me? :(

Additional comments:
For some reason Cornell doesn't pick students from our school...last year only one person got in but she decided not to go there. I can't think of any student who graduated from our school and is attending Cornell. Trust me, our school is one of the most rigorous schools in Asia and a lot of our students go to the top schools- but not Cornell. I'm not sure if it's because our students don't apply there or Cornell simply doesn't like us. CaDo colleges discriminate schools like this? If so, do you think Cornell does not like us? Will that affect me? :(

Oh by the way , Cornell emailed me that I can send in the Math 2 SAT score if I get accepted. (meaning my score will be "delayed").

Cornell Hotel School of administration has been my dream school for such a long time that I think I'll be so devastated if I get rejected. I really want my dream to come true, but I know Cornell is a super reach school for me- and everyone else in the world who applied there. I just want to prepare my self. Tell me what you guys think!

Thank you so much!

this is all my conjecture:

the hard thing about hotel management is that since it is too specific of an area, it is hard to manage your extracurricular for this field of studies.

Right now from your extracurricular, the closest thing it gets would be cafe manager. But if you REALLY think about it, very objectively, many many other candidates will not only have such kind of experience already, if not something better. Better meaning of course, experience at some where that is closer of a “hotel” environment.

The reason why this is important is since you have to persuade to them WHY you want to be a hotelier. I am sure you are probably worried about this, judging by your last minute chance me.

I cannot comment really on the GPA. My school does not have the conventional 4.0 scale. But if you have inclining grades, I am sure it is fine.

Just to conclude:

 1. Overall your gpa + score are nothing exceptional. If you are korean citizen, you might be slightly below average since you lack much of AP scores as well. Reading score isn’t that high as well as a korean CITIZEN.
 2. There is nothing that stands out from EC. Trust me I go to a top notch private school and EVERYONE who applies to ivys have some kind of trip to 3rd world country. Unless you can make a great great essay out of it, there really isn’t much merit and uniqueness anymore.
 3. However, if you were able to squeeze out everything and convey very clearly why hotel school, I still think you have a shot. The reason is because, you can be below average, but remember that almost 50% of the people are below average…

I am deliberately being objective for you and not just easily telling you “oh you have a shot” because I know that cold and objective answer is something you might be looking for. But anyways deepdown you already knew everything that I just posted.

Good luck!

Thanks helpmeoutman!
Anyone else nice enough to chance me? please?

Honestly I have just applied ED myself, and I would have to wait and see myself to find out what it takes to get in. It could be harder or easier to get in and I honestly have no idea what the standard would be.

Good luck!

hey are you in singapore?me too! i wanted to apply cornell hotel ED but changed to stern ED in the last moment  I’m Korean as well and I actually think you are competitive enough so stay positie!

omgshh haha…i feel so inferior now… D…:
but i hope we can meet in cornell helpmeoutman  (hope.) goodluck to you too!

thanks hirano123:) I should stop spazzing and start doing my hwkk…

You’ll get in

You are in the ballgame. Whether you’ll get in ED, RD, waitlist or GT I have no idea – but you are qualified. Bonus points for a good interview.

Your scores are definitely way above average for the Hotel school. This makes me feel a little apprehensive about my app haha

But for an international, it’ll be tougher. The Hotel school always gets a lot of applicants from Asia, I’m not sure why. Are you applying for aid? I’m not sure if Cornell is need blind for international applicants.

Hi pch340, no I didn’t apply for aid…I heard that US colleges in general don’t give aids easily to international students. Ugh I know, they only select 200 international students per year…D:

1) Internationals, especially koreans need higher scores in general.

2) not need blind for internationals and hence a good disadvantage

My weighted GPA is slightly over 4 though (including honors classes) and my school is known for rigorous courses… and if you type “best highschool in asia” my school pops up…:frowning: so then yes…my gpa is low, but will Cornell consider the highschool rigor?

If your high school is pretty well known, they should have a good sense of it. Does your school rank? if it does and you are in the very very top, low number wont mean anything.

The problem could be however that Cornell might not know much about your school at all, considering that people rarely attend/apply there…

That’s true…
Sigh I’m worried now :(

Hi toppc!
Thanks for your reply in my thread !
Your ECs are really excellent, laser-targeted, and demonstrating your passion.
You did a lot of overseas trip and I think you can use it in your essay to leverage your chance. It’s no longer how many activities you have but how impactful they are, both to you and your surrounding. If you have seen the list in my thread, it’s actually only half of what I’ve done, but I decided not to show them cz they’re out of my passion. :)

Your SAT’s definitely in “the league” for the ivy applicant, unlike mine… :(

About your school, I think no need to worry. Since you take APs and you said that you are from the top school in singapore (once again, unlike mine), let me assume that you come from either NUS HS of math and science or Singapore American School. Both are top schools and very recognized so ther’s no need to worry.

Moreover, u are applying for ED right ??

Overall : Get in Get in Get in Get in Get in Get in :)

ps: i’ve replied your post in my thread…

Hahaha thanks patpat  I’m going to stop spazzing and just accept my fate. I mean if it’s my fate to study in Cornell, then it would happen, but if I don’t, then I guess that’s just how it has to be. I really hope we can meet in Cornell though:)

U are absolutely right… It’s all about accepting your whatever your fate is and to move on or refusing it and getting stuck trying to change the past…

But i’m really confident… your SATs are above 75th percentile of admitted students. You ECs are great… what else ???
I’ve looked at cornell’s data and it’s implied that they put equal emphsize on all aspects like SATs, ECs, Essays, personalities… all are marked “considered”

Haizz…
After all, all my prayers for your acceptance from cornell and I hope I will see you in USA ! ^^

did u get into cornell?
