My chances at Duke, Upenn, Columbia, NYU...

Hey,

I am currently a junior at a top prep school in New Hampshire. I have not decided which colleges I plan to apply to, but I wanted to get an idea of where I fit in, in terms of accpetance. All your help will be greatly appreciated.

A rough idea of the colleges I'm thinking:

Columbia
Upenn
NYU
Duke
Cornell
Univ. of Chicago
BC
Tufts
Emory

I'm currently a junior at a top prep school. As far as my course load I have taken honors classes throughout my years...although few APs. My school offers very few AP's so I have tried to take as many as I can fit in.

My school doesn't do GPA or class rank, but I am definetly top 20% and my grade average is probabl an A-.

Courses:

Freshman: Alegbra/Trig, Spanish 2 Honors, English Honors, Bio Honors, Comp. Science, Art

Sophmore: Chemisty Honors, Spanish 3 Honors, English Honors, Statistics, Photography, Mod. European History

Junior: Physics Honors, Spanish 4 Honors, US History, Human Geo. AP, Psych AP, Precalc honors, English Honors

Senior: Calc BC AP, Phyics AP, Bio AP, Spanish 5 AP, English AP, Art

Also, I plan to take the English and Stat AP's without taking a course.

SAT I: 760 Math, 690 Verbal, 710 Writing (2160) I'll probably take it again.

SAT II's: Math II: 790 and Chemistry : 790 (I plan to take more this spring and next fall)

Act: 32

EC's
Key Club (Community Service)
Peer Tutor
Tutor at local Elementry School
School Magazine
Guitar/Piano (12 years, have done performances)
Debate (plan to be head next year)
Habitat for Hummanity
Head of my own Community Service Club

I have also done about 150 hours of Community service at a hospital, nursing home, and mayor's office.

I also plan to take a course at a summer program at some university this coming summer.

How are my Chances? Am I reaching too high? Suggestions?

Thanks

You've got a very good chance at everyone of those schools, congratulations you've earned it.

well i would say upenn, columbia, and duke are reaches due to your average ec's and modest sat's

Thanks for the replies...

One more question...should I try and take the SAT again next year?

Columbia - Reach
Upenn - Reach
NYU - Match/Safety
Duke- Reach
Cornell - Reach/Match
Univ. of Chicago- Reach
BC - Match
Tufts - Match
Emory - Match

Do an SAT prep course or work your way through an SAT prep book and take the SATs again. If you're serious about UPenn. Colulmbia, Duke, and UChicago, you probably need a 2250 to even start being competitive. And by the way, most schools will take the highest section scores from each time you took the SAT and add them together to calculate your total SAT score.

i highly disagree about the necessity of a higher SAT for uchicago.. everything else you're right about the 2250+, but chicago is far less concerned with test scores than other schools. they're really more into how well you present yourself through essays and such, and would rather see an applicant with great writing ability and a strong intellectual base than a student who can pull amazing test scores but has no depth

Perhaps, but UChicago 25 to 75 SAT M+V percentile range is 1330 to 1530, with median at 1430, about in the same range as Duke, UPenn, Columbia, Williams, and Rice. Although the applicant pool attracted to UChicago is more self-selecting than most high-end colleges because of its reputation, seems to me that UChicago must put some weight on the SAT scores to have SAT percentile range it has.

You don't stand out much for Columbia, Upenn, or Cornell...
