I am an African American male junior at a Maryland HS
One of my parents has attended graduate school
My GPA is a 3.2 and WGPA is 3.8 (both rounded)
My SAT score is a 1210 on the new SAT.
APs throughout HS include:
AP Gov’t, AP Lang, AP BC Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, AP Statistics, and I’m contemplating on whether to take AP Lit (Some advice would help).
-I’m also taking a 3 year medical careers program as well
Ex. Curricular include:
Key Club (2 years) and Science NHS (2 Years) currently. Math NHS and Pit Orchestra will probably be on that list senior year.
Soccer (1 year), Wrestling (1 year), and Track & Field (2 years).
What would be my chances of being admitted into College Park? And is there anything I can do to improve those chances?
If I were to get you overconfident then I would be doing you harm so I’m going to be honest. You’re stats are nowhere near the stats needed. Nothing much you can do as a junior except score higher on SAT. I have no idea what UMD policy on new SAT is.
The new SAT is out of 1600 right? It’s definitely possible to get in with your score but it’d be best to raise it. Your GPA is pretty low though, but I never say anything is impossible because my best friend got accepted this year (albeit through freshman connection) with a 3.1
I don’t want to come off as mean but you don’t have the grades or the test scores for a school like UMD. Maryland mainly looks at your gpa and sat with ec’s being gravy on top. Perhaps some good options would be Penn State, UMBC, Syracuse, or Virginia Tech maybe? You should still apply. I mean I applied to Yale just because there’s really no harm in doing so and if I get in well then that’s superb. I did not get in unfortunately, but that being said try to raise your SAT by a good amount and get good first semester grades next year and go for it!
