oh crap i cannot edit it.... Sorry if i confused you.

Oh my Gosh! You scared me, I thought that something's wrong with my stats:eek:

Wow everyone's messages are hard to read here, please write properly. Well I don't know much about admissions or anything but I'm sure colleges won't be impressed with an over-achiever whose English is still... mediocre. Before going on TV for whatever competition, make sure your writing and your speaking are at an American-born level... Take no offense but if I was an admission officer, I'd see you as a prestige whore more than a truly committed student.

OK, I just saw this thread and think it's really weird that a chances post has 84 replies. ;)

Not a single person from Punjab has gotten into HYPM in the past 4 years.

He's been working since the last 18 years, just to let you know.
And by the way, I don't think it is the language I type here that matters. It is the language that I typed on MIT application forms and TOEFL that matters doesn't it?

Quote:-
What does presentable means? and there are people with even modest background then yours. None of what your ECs are suited for MIT.

From how you type, you don't have any chance even after passing 12th.
PS: it's might not miht.

Thanks for the information<frowns>.It would be better if you didn't use such derogatory language. And, you speak as if you are god and don't make typos.</frowns>

Abhishiv, the remark about Punjab does seem a bit uncalled-for; the fact that no-one from Punjab has managed to get in doesn't mean that no-one can, after all. You've made your point, but you do sound a bit rude doing so.

To Ranjodh: Don't apply in the 11th; apply in the 12th (and start early. Don't let these things mess with your Boards.).

Apart from that:
- Re-take your SAT subject tests. This will be a lot easier once you've taken some of the science and maths classes offered in the 11th and 12th; your current percentiles are pretty low, and aren't going to look all that great to admissions officers who see plenty of double 800s.
- To be honest? From the way you're typing here -- no offence intended -- I doubt that your TOEFL score will be extremely high. (I know extremely literate people who didn't manage >110.) If you do manage your high score, fantastic; if you don't, study some grammar and work on your writing skills.
- Consider taking the SAT I? I do know that the TOEFL is accepted as a substitute, but most internationals do take the SAT, and it might put you on a better footing. (Most of my friends did take the SAT I, and their scores there were more impressive than their TOEFL scores. They're all Indian.)
- Study for your 10th Boards. Really, this is the most important thing, and you shouldn't really be on CC at all -- go and work! They matter, honestly.

Thanks a lot for all your advice<smiles>.Maybe my TOEFL score can be somewhere near 105 but then, it will definitely above 100 and that is what MIT recommends. And tell you, I get 90+ in English language and don't really care as to what I type on CC.Hence, the common misinterpretation .
As for 10th,my pre-boards are going on but I am pretty comfortable. No probs. Thanks again, btw.</smiles>

I have already explained the reason for so many typos. Please, excuse me from the allegation of poor English.BTW, thanks for the advice(and I am not

Its not necessary that u will excel SAT english as well.I have seen ppl with 95 in XIIth boards and scoring 500s in english.SAT english is quite different then the one thought here.TOEFL is a bit helpful, but the same thing is applicable here too...
If u want to ''quote'' a sentence then u might use this-
[ quote]......[ /quote]*

*remove the spaces.
for similies consult FAQs.

Yeah, Issac's right on the issue of SAT and TOEFL English being a rather different sort of medium from the Indian boards -- I've seen high-scorers with 500s and 600s on the SAT, and 98 on the TOEFL, and personally: I had 80 on my English boards (which...isn't the best, no), but had 800 Critical Reading and 750 Writing on the SAT. Things tend to be a bit skewed, so watch out.

The point is you still make dumb mistakes that will most likely come up during your interview or on your essay, without you noticing it. Who places a comma after "hence," for instance? I'm just trying to help you coming back to Earth. No matter how good you are, if you're not perfect and not American, it's just not enough for these schools. Watch out for a big disapointment.

I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned the MIT admissions blogs so I will. http://www.mitadmissions.org/
Read Ben Jones' and Matt McGann's posts. Go through their post history. I found them a bit helpful and it's always better to get information directly from the horse's mouth. If you have any questions, post them in the comments section. Somebody usually helps out. :)

Wow...talk about constructive critcism!

shut up ur bloody mouth(whatever u meant y that) but everyone knows u r like devdas too heartbroken to take heart.did any univ reject u?????

I don't even know what this means.

Seriously, you are not destined to be someone good. Go and learn to farm and stay in tan-tan (or wherever the **** you come from), the rest of the world doesn't want you.

Ya..fuzzylogic is right goto MIT blogs..u will get evry help u need!..
karan89:Hey, how u doing? u got in emory yet?

thnx for all ur advice.

karan89:Hey, how u doing? u got in emory yet?

yeah thanks for asking

so guys,i have got a 110 in TOEFL.Shocked??????????????????YEs,but i am not.probably now you shall excuse me from the allegations of poor english.mit recommends 100+.now,110 isnt bad,is it?
COOL!!!!!!!!!!!

i got 29 in reading,24 in speaking(i messed up 1 question),27 in listening and gues what 30 in writing.

ok. gud for u. but 110 in TOEFL isn't a shocking result.

i say shocking because i was butchered here on the forum with allegations of terrible english and most ppl predicted i wont get 110. thats it.
i m not shocked.i expected 110 anyway and i know my English is worth mit anyway.

110 in TOEFL is not a shockin result..we know that u can score above 100 in TOEFL..but the real trouble maker is SAT Reasoning Test..SAT 2 is quite easy for us all..coz int'ls r good at that..(mostly)..

Hi ranojdh. You should attempt to improve your SAT scores in Math and Biology (especially Math, considering that MIT is a Math-oriented school giving students what they call a "liberal science education"). A perfect score would be better. In fact, the middle 50% of MIT applicants (that is from the 25-75%) percentiles have Math IIc scores of 740-800.

Representing your state (Punjab?) in national olympiads or India in international olympiads (and of course winning medals from there) would be good as well, considering they accept only a few applicants from India each year and you would be competing with these people for a place.
