My chances at NYU?

I really hope this message doesn't seem stupid because I'm only a Freshman and still not completely clear on the entire college situation.

But last week I visited New York City with my school to sing at Carnegie Hall and I fell in love with the city! I've also been doing a lot of research on New York University lately and I just feel like it's the school for me. I know I'm not going to be graduating until.. 2016, that's why I'm not sure if this is going to be a stupid question.

Considering I haven't taken an SAT yet, obviously, I was wondering what my chances are with my grades.

I've had a rough patch the last couple of years. When I was in grade school my grades were amazing, I never had anything less than an A+. I'm not making excuses, but things have been tough the last few years and I just stopped caring for a while. But lately, I've been thinking a LOT about my future. And I regret so much how much I let myself slack this year. Freshman year only has about two months left for me to bring my grades up.

All year I've had mostly A's in all my classes, once, though my Science grade went down to a B+. But my biggest problem is math, and I'm not sure how much it really matters. Right now, I hate even admitting this, but I have a D+. I have no idea how it got that low. But I will admit that I could've been trying a lot harder this year but my stupid self just started realizing how important this really is.

I'm going to do my best to bring that grade up to at least a B, and I know I can if I work at it. So my semester grades (which as I understand, are the ones that go on your transcripts), will be all A's with one B.

If I keep grades that high until I graduate, which I know for a fact I have the potential to do if I really try, which I will, what are my chances at NYU? I don't know if that's too specific of a question or not, considering I haven't taken my SAT. But I am a very good test taker most of the time, and I believe I can get a very good score on that if I study really hard. I just want NYU so bad and I know I have a few years to go but my mind is set on this. It's a dream for me.

I'm sorry if this made no sense, it's 3 in the morning. :P
But if you made any sense out of it and don't think I'm an idiot because maybe there's no way to tell how that will effect my chances yet, then please answer! Because it would be a great help! Thank you so much!

P.S. If this helps:
I'll be taking 4 years of Spanish, Math, Language Arts, and Science.
I'll be taking 3 years of Drama.
I'm taking 1 year of Psychology, then my senior year I'm going to take DC Psychology.
When I get to it, I'm going to do as many extra-curricular activities as possible and take as many AP classes as I can possibly sign up for. I'll also be doing Franklin Tech for 2 years, which is apparently a really good thing to have on your transcripts.

I know for a fact I'll be taking all of these because I've already gone through and signed up for all of these classes for the future with my counselor. It's a 4 year planning guide that everyone must do.

I really hope someone can help me on this, to give me a bit of hope. Thank you!

Better do two or three ECs and be passionate about them (getting lots of ECs may not help you that much)

NYU: Aim for 2100+/31+

If you find out that you cannot afford NYU, perhaps City College would be a viable option…

You’re really freaking out about nothing. 4 A’s and 1 D+ equates to a 3.46 GPA. Sure, that’s not exceptional, but if you truly do get all A’s (and the occasional B or B+), you should be fine for NYU. If you get it up to a C+, you’re at a 3.66- a very solid freshman year GPA. Get it up to a B, and you’re at a 3.8, which is above the 50th percentile GPA-wise at NYU. And if what you’re saying is true and you can keep your GPA in that range, assuming you have good test scores and EC’s, your chances are very good for NYU. And even if you end up with something like a 3.5-3.6, that’s certainly not the end of the world. (I had a 3.45 GPA freshman year and I’m doing just fine now.) Also, you’d average this out with your first semester GPA, so a 3.4 (with the D+) still equates to a 3.6 year-long GPA.

Now, of course you should try to get your GPA as much as possible to improve your chances, but don’t freak out because you don’t have a perfect 4.0. NYU looks for excellence, not perfection. A test score above 2100/31 and three or so quality EC’s should help you as well. But just a word for the future, don’t take an AP class just for the sake of taking it- take it only if you feel you could do well in the class. Good luck and I second what the above said about City College.
