My chances at the Engineering College

I'm extremely interested majoring in Computer Engineering at UIUC. I live in New Jersey, so I'm OOS. I would like to know if I'm on the right path to getting accepted. I took two honors classes as a Freshman, but took all honors classes in my Sophomore and Junior Years.

Freshman Year

Honors Algebra I---A
English I---A
Honors Biology---A
Gym---A+
Computer Applications---A
Spanish I---A+
World History---A+
Catholicism---A+
OVERALL GPA (Weighted) 4.31

Sophomore Year

Scripture---A+
Health/Drivers Ed.---A
Intro to Java Programming---A+
Honors English II---A
Honors American History I---A
Honors Algebra II---B+
Honors Spanish II---A
Honors Chemistry---B+
OVERALL GPA (Weighted) 4.31

Junior Year

Morality---A+
AP Computer Science---A+
Honors English III---A
AP American History---A
Honors Pre-Calculus---A+
Honors Spanish III---A+
Honors Physics---A+
OVERALL GPA (Weighted) 4.78

As you can tell, I did fairly well in Freshman year, dropped a bit in Sophomore year, and really did well in my Junior year. Senior year i will be taking AP Calculus (BC), AP European History, AP Government, and AP Physics C. Along with these grades, fairly strong EC's, and a strong ACT/SAT score, do you think I have a chance? Sorry for the long post.

Can you afford the OOS tuition + other costs at UIUC Engineering? $47,000 per year for 2011, likely higher for 2012 freshmen, and virtually no aid for out of staters.

Yes. Lucky for me the tuition is not too much of a problem. It’s affordable.

you’ll get in. waht’s “strong” sat/act?

30 act, 2050 sat.

I doubt you’ll have much trouble (if any) getting accepted.

I’m in-state and was accepted into their Computer Engineering program for this fall.

My post junior year GPA was 3.88 (on the 4.0 scale), I was top 5% of my class, and my ACT was also a 30 (never took SAT). I’m caucasian so I didn’t have anything like that working for me. Also, my ECs were non-existant to the say the least.

The one unusual thing I had working for me was that I took Calc 3 and Ordinary Differential Equations my senior year of high school (took BC Calc junior year). It was a dual credit course with the local community college. I also took AP Physics C, AP Gov (not comparative), regular spanish 3, and regular english iv during my senior year.

The one weird thing is that out of the 10-15 in my math class who applied to U of I, about 4-5 of them got deferred. They were all eventually accepted (most with engineering majors), but I just found it strange because they all had stellar ECs. Some of them were even captains of sports teams.

Assuming you get accepted, there are a couple things I think I should point out:

It’s good that you took 3 years of Spanish. It only takes 2 years of a foreign language to get into the College of Engineering, but unless you have 3 or more you will have to take it again at U of I (even if you’re not studying the language).

If your English ACT subscore is >32 you don’t have to take the stupid freshman composition class.

Don’t stress out over Gov or Euro. You can get the maximum allowed credit with 4’s on each, and even then you only get a combined 6 credit hours.

Both portions of Physics C (mechanics and E&M) and BC Calc all requires 5’s for the maximum allowed credit. 5’s on both parts of Physics C will place you in Thermodynamics and Quantumdynamics (usually taken together for 1 semester) and then you’re done with Physics! A 5 on BC will put you in Calc 3.

computerfreak99, Thank you so much for the info, as well as your valuable advice.

I had a weighted GPA much less than that and a 31 ACT with virtually no extracurriculars and was accepted to engineering.

Very nice stats, I don’t think they have a reason to not accept you. Plus, I don’t know what’s with UIUC (in general) accepting New Jersey students by flocks (I’m one of them haha).

With the state’s financial woes and the corresponding cutbacks in university funding, out of staters bearing cash are being welcomed with open arms.

You are definitely in with a 30 ACT score and your GPA.
