My chances at UC

SAT: 2230

Weighted GPA (10-11): 3.45 limited to 8 APs
Weighted GPA (10-11) : 3.68 with no limits
Have 4 C over these 2 years.

Applying for all UCs except for Merced, SantaCruz. In addition, applying Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Long Beach and North Ridge (last one being, safety school).

Major interested in: Chemical Engineering. Chose Business as alternative alternative option offered in the application

Extra Curricular Activities: Nothing exceptional, but reasonably good.

What are my chances of getting into at least mid level UCs like, UCI, UCSB, and UCD?

Appreciate for taking time to respond to this post.

SAT Chemistry: 630
SAT Math 2: About to take in November

For UCs, you can look at past admission rates at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1903428-faq-uc-historical-frosh-admit-rates-by-hs-gpa.html , though chemical engineering is often a more selective major than the campus overall.

CSUN does not have chemical engineering. SJSU does have chemical engineering. For SJSU, see http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/ , which has links to previous year thresholds for admission.

with that gpa, definitely recommend you to apply to UCSC.
to be quite honest, it is much below even the 25th percentile uc gpa for those mid tiers UCs, so they are a reach, even with a good sat score.

Thanks ucbalumnus! Yes, CSUN does not have chemical engineering, but I went for it as my safety school as it is close to my home (only college that I can go staying at home). I opted for business as it is my 2nd preferred choice of major.

Thanks dota2fan! Agree that my chances are low even in mid UCs, but hopeful of getting into at least UCR or Cal Poly Pomona/Long beach. Heard both of them have good Chemical Engineering program.

Math + CR SAT score?

Hi Gumbymom,

It is 1470

3.45 GPA and 1470 SAT CR+M gives a CSU eligibility index of 4230. For SJSU chemical engineering, this is higher than the previous thresholds of 3700 (2016) and 3400 (2015), although there is no guarantee what the threshold will be this year. So you may want to include SJSU in your CSU application.

My thinking is that Pomona and Long Beach seem to be as good as SJSU for Engineering, especially Chemical Engineering, so wondering if I should apply for yet another college as I already chose 9 colleges (already submitted app for 3 Cal State colleges and planning to apply UCs in first week of November).

Thanks again for taking time to post your responses.

Where can I find 25the percentile GPA info for UCs?
Also, some of you responded in another thread with similar student characteristics that he/she may get admission into UAlabama with full scholorship. Where can I find such information for Out of State colleges. I have decided to not apply out of state colleges because of the cost reason, but I might consider them if I get admission into a decent college with some scholarship.

Thanks again for all of your help.

UC Freshman profiles list 25th and 75th percentiles for GPA and test scores. GPA will be the issue since UC’s are very GPA focused.

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/profiles/index.html

Freshman admits for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79
UCB: 2%
UCLA: 3%
UCSD: 6%
UCD: 11%
UCSB: 13%
UCI: 16%
UCSC: 47%
UCR: 64%
UCM: 80%

Having good test scores,EC’s and essays will help.

Good luck

University of Alabama has a full tuition (not including housing and food) scholarship (+$2,500 for engineering majors) based on GPA and test scores: http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.php and http://eng.ua.edu/admissions/scholarships/ .

Some other schools have stats-based scholarships: http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/ . However, the list has not been updated for a while, so check on school web sites for any changes.

Thanks a lot!

Looks like you got a golden ticket to Alabama - free tuition plus the STEM scholarship is hard to beat - well done.

I think you have a really good shot. Just make sure you spend time writing passionate essays.

Got provisional admission in Chemical Engg in Cal State Long Beach today. Eagerly waiting for UC results in March.

Got CPP notification today. Awaiting eagerly for UCs in March

Admitted in UCR.

Obligated to provide my updates as you are all very helpful with your suggestions. Only UC, I got is UCR (did not apply to Santa Cruz and Merced). Rest of them are CPP, CSULB, and CSUN (last one into honors program in business). In all other colleges, it is Chemical Engg, which is my first choice.

Planning to join UCR, though CPP Chemical Engg program is also a good one.

Thanks for all of your help and advice.
