My Chances at UCB or UCLA

I'm curious about my chances of getting into UCLA or UCB.

I am applying for a Microbiology major at UCB and a Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics (Pre) major for UCLA.

I received a supplement app from LA, but not B.

Ethnicity: Asian

ACT Composite: 30
AP Biology Exam: 5, AP Language: 3

Extracurriculars: Jui Yee Tong Kung-Fu & Lion Dancing Group (4 yrs)

Key Club (2 yrs)

In my personal statement (PS), I first talked about how I moved from Colorado to California, and how my drunk father would treat me badly, so I would always stay away from home. Then I found YUCA, my service group, and things have turned out a lot better since then.

In my 2nd PS, I talked about my commitment to kung-fu and how it has helped me to cope with the dangers of my neighborhood, as well as how I've grown stronger, and more mature and resilient in everything I do.

What is your UC GPA? You listed “highest scores” on your SAT tests, but the UC’s take your highest single sitting score. Your rank is excellent and will help your chances, however, Cal is probably a mid reach and UCLA is a low reach. I hope you are also applying to UCSD, UCI, and UCD. Those schools are more in alignment with your test scores. Sorry about your family situation, but it sounds like you have really pulled through it and are doing quite well. Good luck.

“but the UC’s take your highest single sitting score.” – Is this confirmed?

Oh, that is correct; UC’s take the highest sitting score.

Math: 720
Writing: 640, Essay: 8
Critical Reading: 600
Total: 1960

I would love to hear more opinions from you guys!!

20% chances of getting into Berkeley; 40% chances of getting into UCLA, more or less.

You need fall back schools.

My fall backs are UCSD and UCI. I have already received acceptance letters from SDSU, Cal Poly Pomona, and Cal State Long Beach. My majors for those schools are Astronomy, Mechanical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering (respectively).

Anymore feedback?

I agree that Cal and UCLA are going to be unlikely. Both GPA and scores are below their averages. I’d say Irvine is a solid match but no guarantee and SD is a reach, especially for a bio major.
