Extracurricular)

VUE Investment Team (Founder and President): have invested fundraised money ($ 10k) in venture (V), undervalued (U), and emerging (E) markets with 8 teammates. The team has invested in Tesla, LG Chem, Kakao, Inometry, KOSPI Index, etc. It allowed me to experience the real investment world from fundraising to managing investment portfolio.

VUE Stock & Market Analysis Team (Founder and President): analyzes stock markets with the teammates before making the actual investments. By debating with team-members, it helped the team to catch focal points and make careful decisions before jumping into the markets, which allowed us to have substantial amount of gross profit.

Internship at Accounting Firm: recorded financial reports of various firms and helped finishing financial statement of the accounting firm. It allowed to understand the way to see every content in financial statements such as PER, ROE, mindfulness of CEO-learning that CEO’s eager decides most companies’ successes.

English Teacher for Korean Elementary Student at Nursery (Voluntary): read english fairy tale books and taught english words by using drawings, imagination, and pictures. It convinced me to build good schools for unprivileged and orphan kids when I become a successful investor in the future.

Varsity Track & Fields: 200m dash / Shotput

Speed Skating Team (Captain)-3rd Place on Korean National Championship. As a role of a captain, I had to encourage teammates and manage their schedule on both regular and championship days. I learned that a leader cannot exist without the cooperation with teammates; leader makes great team and teammates makes great leader.

Movie Research Club (Founder and President)- watching and analyzing films are my greatest hobby. I always try to catch the meaning of devices used in the fils; however, it is not always successful. However, by working with teammates, the team and I could find cinematographic devices that I have missed before.

Media Team (Camera / Video Editor)-records sport games of the school and posts it on school’s website and youtube channel. I learned how important the teamwork is: without instructors and supporting camera, I could have not filmed an entire games. Moreover, it helped me to upgrade my movie-researching skills.

Model UN (Treasurer)-manages money of the club from ride and hotels to registration fee.
It taught me how to manage same amount of money more efficiently by comparing the prices and programming regular meetings.

School Tour Guide: introduces information about my school to the visitors. It taught me that giving honest information is the best way to be trusted and socialize with first-meeting people. Moreover, introducing information to new people improved my presentation skill, which will be useful when I start a business.

and other extracurricular activities like Tutoring, Alpine Skiing (Semi-pro), Debating Club, and others.

I choose Cornell as my first choice because the school is experimental and groundbreaking unlike other schools. I believe that such unique characteristics of Cornell will lead me to a successful investor before and after the graduation.

I hesitated to ask questions to experts; however, since I am very eager to it, I decided to post the question.

Thank you.

Hey!

Disclaimer: by no means an expert just a kid that was lucky to get in, and trying to help out a few peers.

You have a really, really impressive resume, so congrats on all that you have done! Your GPA is not the highest (but it may be high for your particular boarding school, don’t obssess over, but consider past student outcomes). Also, don’t over-glorify the Stock Analysis Team: not saying you did here, but it is a super common mistake. Say what you did and how much time you spent, but don’t try to make it appear to be a hedge fund (again, people make this mistake once they get to the Common App).

I think you have a good shot for Dyson, so really make sure you kill those essays, but have a more specific and thought out reason for Dyson. Your sentence about Dyson being groundbreaking and experimental could reign true for Wharton, Olin, Haas, and numerous other top schools. Not trying to put you down, but I just want to make sure you spend the time to figure out (both for yourself and your essays), Why Dyson.

The ED1 and 2 strategy is good, and I think you have a very strong shot at Emory. Dyson is a really small school with a super low acceptance rate, so don’t fret if something happens, and be ready for not only ED2, but also RD. Good luck!
