My chances for Stanford/ good schedule for high school

DISCLAIMER I have many times people tell me that what I do I just do it for the college. which is not true I like all these things.

Hello, I am upcoming 9th grader and I was wondering if I am starting off the right track. I am really determined to get into:
-Stanford
-All ivies (except Dartmouth but if that’s the only one I’ll go)
-MIT
-NYU
-UCLA
-some fashion school if my clothes store takes off in the next 3 years

Location: I am from Philadelphia, PA and go to the one of the best magnet program in the city and state. There is 2,400 people in the whole school tho D:.

Ethnicity: Mom: Puerto Rican Dad:Black and German (I really don’t know what ethnicity I should put cause I consider myself in the Hispanic Area)

Hooks: My mom is an uber driver and single mom, I am not sure my income bracket but I am going to say less than 100,000 at least?, first person to make it to an out of state college

Class: Pretty much all honors/mentally gifted . I am taking Spanish 2 and geometry honors. I am debating to take AP classes (we have 26) or IB dual enrollment at UPENN and Lasalle for the future.

Sport: Today I just made it into my school’s varsity tennis team(doubles). For the past 8 years our team won the district and public league championship(singles and doubles). They struggle in states but I am determined to help my team make it farther ;). Am I on the level to get recruited to Stanford?. I might do basketball, cheerleading, or track.

Ecs: - I opened my own online clothes store
-working on becoming a youtuber who does covers because I want to continue my singing but not sure if I can fit it in.
-Starting my own arts charity once school starts.
-And of course robotics!!! I love it and my team made it to the worlds championship last year! I have a lot of plans for them!
-Theater
-played flute since 2nd grade
-choir since 2nd grade
-planning to start the science Olympiad and science national honor society in my school.

I hope I can fit all my Ecs because I can’t picture all my artistic training ^_^. What are my chances if I keep a steady grade and test score?

Oh and if anyone has tips on scholarships, competitions, or titles I can enter it be a blessing. I am looking on my own atm

I know I have high expectations but I really want to make my family proud while still trying to do the things I love. Going off topic My mom is pissed cause I decided to to go to public school instead of pushing an elite boarding to take me. I just wanted to say no matter where anyone goes you can make it anywhere. A school doesn’t define you as an applicant ^_^!

We would have no idea of your chances for financial aid now, or in four years, because we don’t know your family’s financial situation. You said your mother makes $100k, but what about your father?

If you get a tennis scholarship at a D1 school (you are female?), it will be a full scholarship, except at the Ivies that don’t award athletic scholarships.

Your activities are fine if not overkill. Keep your grades high and get near perfect scores.

These are not hooks. They will not help, you get accepted to college.

You are a ninth grader. Your primary goal is to do the very best you can academically. Take a rigorous course load and get all A’s or close to it. Get top SAT or ACT scores.

If you are interested in a division I athletic scholarship, you will also need to excel at your sport…and be. Recruited athlete. This means you need to be the very best at your sport…in your school, and likely in your state…or close to it. You will work with your coaches in terms or recruitment if that is a possibility. There is NO WAY for anyone where to tell you if you are on the right track to be recruited for tennis by Stanford. You haven’t played on varsity game of tennis on the HS level…yet.

As noted…the Ivies do not give athletic scholarships…at all.

No way to predict financial aid at any of your schools because it’s simply too far away.

If financial aid is a concern, I would take NYU and UCLA off your list…unless you receive a full ride D I athletic scholarship,

In terms of need based aid, all but UCLA require the Profile in addition to the FAFSA, and most will require financial information from your father if he is still alive, and not in jail.

Now,regarding your ECs. I hope that in the next year, you develop a passion for something, instead of the huge laundry list you currently have.

You’ve got some high goals, but you do indeed seem to be in the right track to get into a good school. Also ‘first person to make it to an out of state college’ doesn’t really mean much. All of the school’s you listed (with the exception of NYU and possibly UCLA) are crapshoots. Some of the most qualified applicants get rejected. However you do seem to be racking up the qualifications quite quickly. Continue on the track you are on and keep up the good work!
ETA: No one can really ‘chance’ you without a GPA and SAT/ACT scores.

I hope you are joking about being recruited for tennis at Stanford. Google the three new incoming freshman they recruited for women’s tennis. One was the #1 player in the nation from ages 10 -17 and the other two were not far behind.

You ask in your thread what your chances are for Stanford and you’re only an incoming freshman? I’d have to definitively say your chances of getting into Stanford in each of the next three years are zero, zero, and zero. Take the hardest classes you can, get stellar grades, high test scores, stand out in whatever EC’s you choose to participate in, and take two aspirins and call us three years. Good luck!

Are you from CA? If not, UCLA gives virtually no aid to out of state students.

It is very hard to be recruited for tennis, you have to be a ranked player usually.

If you do First Robotics, there are many schools that give substantial First scholarships, but they are not ones you mention, however they are good ones and there are more good schools out there that you don’t mention.

Do not put your sights on UCs if you are out of state because they will not be giving you any money, you will pay a minimum of 33k per year as an OOSer and more likely 58k.

Are you on the USTA satellite circuit? Are you nationally ranked in Tennis?
There are a lot of California and Florida kids who are ranked nationally. What’s your ranking? If you are not in the top 20 Nationally, I would say no for athletics recruiting.

@TomSrOfBoston If you read carefully, they are from PA.

@19hollowayc You have some nice goals, and you have a lot of ambition, which is nice. You might find yourself dropping some hard classes or ECs though. You have no official test scores, not even the slightest of an HS GPA. Come back in two years, with what you have achieved and actual numbers. Have fun in high school!

I have to agree. Why are you posting multiple times? The answer isn’t going to change.

Are you nationally ranked in track?

You mention track, tennis, basketball. You would need to be very highly ranked in any of these to be a recruited athlete.

And in track, even D1 probably won’t get you a full scholarship. The schools simply don’t have a big pot of money for non-revenue sports. Very few get full tuition scholarships in track. You might get half tuition or quarter tuition, but I wouldn’t count on it.

As an OOS student, the UCs would not fund your education. Take them off of your list.

@19hollowayc, you are obviously bright and talented, but that and $4 will get you a latte at Starbucks. Being a URM will help a bit. But right now you are all over the map:

  • "I am really determined to get into Stanford; all ivies (except Dartmouth but if that's the only one I'll go); MIT". I assume you are just throwing out a list of top names. You have lots of time, but I hope that eventually you'll actually think about what schools might make sense for you, and not just be swayed by reputation. "I really want to make my family proud" seems to be driving you quite a bit.
  • Your ECs are spread way too thin: varsity tennis, flute, theatre, choir, arts, science olympiads, robotics, youtube, online clothing. You can't possibly participate in all of those things at a meaningful level - there just aren't enough hours in the week, and even if you could, your accomplishments would just be diluted by the sheer number of activities. Pick the ones which are really meaningful to you and run with them. You have time.

Right now you come across as the prototypical ambitious HS student who is trying to hard and cramming too much in. Try to relax and enjoy high school. Don’t overcommit yourself and enjoy the ride. You’ll end up doing better in the long run, both personally and in terms of applying to colleges.

^^They would for a tennis or basketball scholarship.

Well…yes…if he is a nationally ranked player in tennis or basketball.

Hard to to predict since he hasn’t yet played a varsity game in any sport!

I play tennis too and it lots of people make it on Varsity especially for doubles if your partner is good. High school tennis is a joke anyways if you are really good. Most pro tennis players never play in high school and play in ATP tournaments or junior tournaments. How many junior tournaments have you won?

@michelle426

In that case UCLA is financially out of reach.

The OP would need to be quite nationally ranked to be an athletic scholarship recipient at the UCs listed.

If she doesn’t know what it takes to be a recruited athlete in tennis now, it is not likely she is playing at that level.
