hey guys, was wondering how hard is it to get acceptance for the masters in economics program in canada, I have a bachelors of science in economics from a top university in europe. the universities say the minimum requirement is B/3.0 to be considered but for someone who has a B+ / 3.3 gpa what are my chances?
Do you have A’s in economics classes? Not getting A’s in economics classes would typically be an indicator that you are not a strong candidate for graduate school. If there is some other strength that you have, such as independent research, then you will have to foreground that. Or be prepared to prove yourself by entering a perhaps less than stellar program and working hard to excel there.
thanks for the reply, unfortunately no i dont have straight A’s on all my economics classes but i do have some A’s on some economics classes. And I forgot to mention that I scored well on my GRE (320) so I hope that will give me a push.
one more thing in your opinion whats a competitive gpa to gain admission to these top universities?
You are in the running with a 3.3. If your university was in France, that will give you a boost for McGill.
Do you have research? Do you have references from economics professors who know you well? What was your quantitative subscore on the GRE?
thanks for answering, i got 165 on the quantitative section and 155 on the analytical writing part.
165 on the quantitative section is great!
You might have difficulty with admission to U of T. They are looking for an average GPA>3.5. They receive a lot of applications for the M.A. in economics.
You likely have a better chance at UBC as long as you have the course requirements and country requirements. See the links below. McGill has similar requirements to UBC.
So, overall, I would say you have a good shot at UBC and McGill, assuming that you have the course prerequisites and country prerequisites for UBC.
Here’s what U of T is looking for:
Successful MA applicants have qualifications well above our minimum requirements. Most of them have the following characteristics:
- average GPA in the last year of undergraduate studies above A-
- average undergraduate CGPA above the mid-point between B+ and A-
- advanced micro and macro theory courses with at least A-
- advanced econometrics course(s) with at least A-
- several courses on mathematics (e.g. calculus, linear algebra, real analysis,…) with high marks
- high GRE scores (above 162 for the quantitative reasoning test and above 4 for the analytical writing test)
- strong and informative letters of recommendation.
Since we receive over 25 foreign MA applications for each available slot, we seldom admit a foreign applicant in our MA program who does not exceed all the items in this profile. (The grades mentioned above are expressed using the grading scheme at the University of Toronto. Grades from other schools will be converted taking into account both their grading scheme and the rigor in which it is applied.) FAQs for U of T masters in economics admission
