Is it normal to feel depressed when reading of those Chances threads with their unbelievably sexy grades, high boards, are probably good looking for some reason, athletic, have jobs, save orphans from burning buildings with their teeth while finding the cure for cancer and doing Calculus? I mean I’m a good student…I’m thinking of applying to Brown, but Sweet Jesus people reading theses posts make pop what little air is in my self-esteem balloon.

You must not forget that our beloved College Confidential bunch is not a random subset of the student population. CC'ers posting on these forums tend to be among the smartest and nerdiest of the applicants, in general.

This is not a representative sample of applicants. If you think you would benefit from Brown or any other school you owe it to yourself to apply. Some people with stats like the ones thrown around here get rejected, some get in. It's about being candid with your application. It is quite likely that Brown and any other schools would benefit from your presence as much as you would from them. Speaking from my HS class experience, Be candid and yourself, the right school will almost always find you. It may not be your initial first choice -- but Adcoms do their jobs quite well

I know that when I started as an applicant looking at CC, I thought I could predict pretty well who would get in where judging by their stats. But April rolled around, and I was pretty floored by who got in and who didn't at various schools, Ivies in particular. You really never know, and simple stats never present the full picture.

Don't discount your own chances- browsing CC is fine for gettting a general sense of the competitiveness of these schools, but we're never going to be the adcom themselves. Plus you sound like you'd write a fun essay. That's just judging from what little you wrote in your post, it made me laugh.

Haha, thanks, I try my best to please the random people of the internet and yes, I do plan to have some FUNerama with the essays...My U of Chicago one is pretty funny, probably a little offensive, and....i must say, somewhat sexually provacative.

haha which uchicago essay are you doing?
i'm not sure which i will do....but i think the first one.

I did the one where they ask for my favorite novel, poem, movie, etc. which i could answer in a heart beat...if i had a heart. Thats neither here nor there.

You'll be surprised at how many of these people you mention actually don't get in where they want to, even though their credentials are off the charts. And, you will see that somebody with "lesser" stats will get in. It is the college's preference on who they want to accept or not.

So, theoretically, because I am just absolutely fantastic, delightfully witty, irrevocably unsurpasable (and other complicated flattery) and can also count to ten quite quickly, I just might make it? How comforting. Although if they do, most predictably, reject me, at least I can look back and confirm all of those times I just thought i was a failure. Thanks a hoot Brown.

brown makes me nervous.
my stats are ok (not fabulous like the ones posted here) and their admissions process is so......unpredictable.
after i visited brown, i felt very unremarkable. there are soo many amazing people there. basically, if you have something unique that you are fabulous at, you are what they are looking for.
