My Chances.....here we go...

alright,
Male - Indian(as in from India)
Rising Senior - IB Diploma.
SATs
- as a Junior(Nov):
Math: 710
Verbal: 630
Writing: 470 Essay:6<--pfft, i think i had a grid error.
- July
Math: 730
Verbal: 630
Writing: 700 Essay:10

I worked a lot on my writing, but I still did sometihng stupid, I missed 2 Easy(1), so next time I will try much harder on my next one, and of course, my Reading needs improvement, for which I have been doing a lot more practices.

Sat II:
Math:790
- I took in May, it was AP week, and I was just wanting a feel for the SAT iis, so I just took 1. Planning on taking, US History, Physics, Chem. in Nov.

APs: taking APs with IB is a bit hard, all of these classes, meaning I've not taken any classes for APs(exception of AP World History), but got a book and studied in conjuction with IB classes.
Sophmore: AP World History- 3
Junior:
US History - 4
Spanish - 3
Economics - 5
Physics B - 4

3.84 GPA, Weighted.
I go to a IB Diploma School, so all of my classes have been either Pre-IB or IB. I dont know how to compare, my classes are above honors, I think, but I don't know how to put it on a scale.

1 C- Math: Pre-Cal, 79.4
I did bad on 2 tests, which pretty much set up my low grade. Next semester when I moved to Calc, I got a 88. (just throwing it out there...)

ECs:
- Volunteered with a local doctor who made trips to nursing homes - helped patients, filled out paper work, some basic tests. approx 6 hours
- Worked with a group of students(around 7) to raise money for local community radio. - My guess would be around $40,000, exact amount unknown for now.
- Governor's Honor Program - Architecture: 1 of 16, 1 of 2 juniors in a EC program where we spent 6 weeks on a college campus working with an architect.
- Robotics Club - 2 years - we won a competition 3rd of 12.
- Computer Programming Classes- basically a local college sponsored a 2 year long course where we prepare for AP CS, and I won the final competition.
- Also, you know, the clubs, Beta, Model UN, Cultural Club, some more, but I dont know if they are really important.

Notes:

Most of my grades are high Bs, as in the previous semester I had 5 grades between 87-89 out of 8 classes each year.

I was planning on being a Mechanical Engineer practically up until 3 months ago. Now a pre-med seems interesting. This is why I took IB physics, but I will be taking AP Bio next year.

Basically since i will be the first in my family to go to college in the USA, I have no idea about the standards/averages/w.e
Can I get any feedback on WHAT range of schools I should be looking at, I am hoping with more practice I can atleast push my SAT scores past 2150, or 2200, which is my goal. So again, what range of schools should I be looking at for Pre-Med.

Thanks.

...bump...

In my view you should be applying to schools just below the Ivies, plus one or two Ivies with majors you are interested in, plus a safety school that you like.

Since you want to go pre-med, try John Hopkins and Boston University, plus schools like Ohio State as a safety and UCLA or UC Santa Barbara as a safe match to match.

Presuming you want someplace fairly cheap (in case financial aid is a problem down the line), consider schools like Arizona State or Penn State that have honors programs that might get you a scholarship based upon your grades/test scores. Also, look at schools with easy aid for internationals, like Colgate.

Then apply to two Ivies as slight reaches to reaches. Probably Dartmouth, UPenn, or Brown would fit you best. (Columbia's site in New York is expensive, Cornell focuses on admitting New York residents and is focused on business, architecture, and agriculture; Princeton is engineering based, and Harvard and Yale are overly competitive for admissions.)

Good luck.

darkzeroman:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCLA: Slight Reach

No, Georgia resident, any more opinions? thanks.

I misread your post. I thought that 3.84 was an unweighted GPA.

In this case, you need to shoot slightly lower. Schools like Georgia Tech, UC Santa Barbara, Lehigh, Illinois, and Carnegie Mellon are matches. Schools like UCLA and Virginia are slight reaches. And the Ivies are all reaches--sorry.

Safeties would be places like Purdue, Arizona State, and possibly Indiana. A safe match would be someplace like UC Santa Cruz or Univ of Alabama.

Ok, alright, i will calculate my UW GPA after I finish this post, but I have a question.

Even though I realize my GPA is a bit on the low-side, I also want to say that As are not given very easily at my school. What my point is, I want to show colleges that even though I got a B, an A is pretty hard to get, as in out of a class of 16, only 3 get an A(my physics class).

this is in contrast to say, my other (different school)friend's GPA where he takes AP Physics, gets an A in the class, 3 on the AP test, but has a higher GPA than me.
-_-
Some other classes/teachers' average grade is an A, my school isnt like that, and this shows up on my GPA. Am I exaggerating? or does this rarely happen?

any feedback on post above?
