My Chances of getting in College Park?

Hello to anyone who is reading this,

I am a junior in high school and I recently had a rather rude awakening about school. I am very disturbed and stressed. I slacked off my freshman and sophomore year and a little bit my this year. But worry not, I am currently doing everything I can to raise up basically everything. Here are my credentials,

Class Rank(by unweighted): 27, Top 2% of class
G.P.A: Unweighted 2.5, 2.88 Weighted
SAT: Not yet taken, PSAT: 1180 490 Critical Reading, 360 Math, 330 Writing

Worthy Courses
-A.P U.S, History
-A.P Language and Composition
-Bio Medical Science

Courses I will take next year
-A.P Economics
-A.P Human Geography
-A.P Statics
-A.P Physics

Sports:
-Lacrosse
-Sports

Clubs
-Chess
-Robotics Club

So, yes- I know i’m very stupid to even try for UMD. But, I believe I can by the end of this year, raise my GPA, QPA, and my SAT scores to a point where I could be considered worthy, I hope I want to prove everyone wrong and prove to myself I can do this. I know this is unrealistic but I also know that I have a chance, a very slim one matter in fact but that is all i need now. I am determined. I want to know my chances so I can motivate my self ever more. Thank you for reading and any tips will be helpful.

@aaazmah, So glad to hear you had a “wake up” call. Keep up that energy. Know that you’re now competing with other students who did not slack off during their freshman, sophomore, or junior years. My sense is UMCP is very stats driven. I know of an IS 3.8 applicant for Fall 2015 that was deferred until Spring 2016. I think the Fall 2015 admit rate was 40% this year, down from 46% for Fall 2014. Although there are certainly other factors considered for admission, UMCP may be a “reach” for you. Continue to be motivated and ensure that you apply to a number of schools where you’d be in the top 25% of the university’s applicant academic pool. I know through experience that you will be admitted to a great school next year that’s an academic match for you and you will thrive there.

Best of luck to you!

boost ur gpa and sat. Then, use ur essay to explain how u turned ur life around and will keep working hard in college

@aaazmah, also understand the interplay of the [Admission Review Factors](http://www.admissions.umd.edu/requirements/AdmissionReviewFactors.php) used by the Admission Committee to assess each applicant’s academic merit. There are more than 26 factors.

Boost your GPA and study study study for your SAT, volunteer more, become a honor roll student senior year. Good luck. I wish I was still in high school.

I know someone who got in with similar GPA but its definitely a stretch. If you do really well on the ACT you should have a decent chance.

Son had a 31 act and 3.1uw/3.7 weighted and got rejected. I would try community college fort 2 years and transfer.

You have a very high class rank for your GPA. Hopefully UMD will consider the class rank as context for your GPA, whether it is a result of your school’s grade deflation or something else. Also, if you want to bring up your unweighted GPA (which is probably a bit more important at this point), you should find a balance between taking easy classes and AP classes. You’ll also need much higher SAT scores-- my guess would be at least 1800 (600 on each section). Have you taken the SAT since you wrote the post?

Because you’re working so hard now, I have confidence that you will end up in the right school (as in the right school for you) eventually, whether it is freshman year of college or later. Don’t give up!

The poster above me is right, your class rank is quite high considering your GPA. Can you give some context to that? Do you go to private school or a magnet school where the classes are very rigorous and grade inflation is nonexistent? That could possibly help you in admissions. Conversely, if you are a relatively high performer in a bad, underrepresented school district/area that may also work in your favor. Are you an URM? That may also give you a bit of a boost as well. The biggest boost, however, will come from being in-state (are you instate?) and applying early action. If you’re really serious about UMD (and I definitely sense that you are) you must apply early action this November, it’s where they get about 90% of their incoming class.

Can you give any kind of projection about what you’re GPA may be like after your junior year, best case scenario? I’d say it would have to be AT LEAST in the 3.0 range. UMD is getting more and more competitive every year. If that’s not possible, don’t give up! There’s still time to hone other parts of your application, especially your SAT score. I personally don’t think that the PSAT is always a very accurate predictor of SAT scores. I ended up scoring about 300 points higher than my PSAT scores indicated. Take an SAT practice test and see what those scores are.

I don’t think the Class of 2016 is going to be able to take the redesigned SAT, which really sucks, (I would’ve loved to sit an SAT where wrong answers didn’t count against me!) however, look on the bright side, all the prep books for the old SAT will be on sale!! Which is great, because in all seriousness, you’re GPA will be on the low side even with a straight A report for junior year (straight As is what you should be aiming for right now!), so test prep will be crucial.

Also, try out the ACT while you’re at it. Some people just do better on the ACT. Not entirely sure why, they just do. And, the great thing about having your epiphany now is you have a lot of future sittings left at your disposal. I, unfortunately, waited until September to sit my first SAT - do NOT do that.

I want to be honest with you, your chances right now are very, very, very low. You NEED to put in the effort this year and really buckle down and change your stats for the better, and you seem to understand that. Get the grades you need, do some test prep, join a few new clubs, seek the best recommenders you can, and practice your essay writing - but also, know your limits and sort out other options. Transferring may be the best option financially and realistically, and there’s more colleges beyond UMD.

I’m really rooting for you, I wish you the best of luck! Keep us posted - I hope to see some happy news from you on next years results thread. I hope this novella of a post gives you some motivation!!
