Nervous about Maryland chances

Hey Everyone, I'm a junior in high school who lives in NOVA and wants to go to UMCP. My unweighted GPA is about a 3.1 and my weighted GPA is like a 3.73, which I know is terrible, but I know if I work hard I can do better.
This year I am taking AP Calc BC, AP Chem, AP CS, and AP USH, Honors English, Physics, (there's no honors), and Band.
Next year I am planning on taking Multi-Var Calc, AP Stats, AP Econ, AP Comparative Gov, AP Lit, AP Physics, Concert Band, Jazz Band
My first SAT is a 1840(1240 Math + CR) but that was my sophomore year and I know I'll do much better this year. I'm expecting it to go up the next time I take it.
My EC's are, and I'm gonna include my senior year as well:

4 Years of Band/Jazz Band
3 Years of Marching Band with 1 Year of leadership role(next year)
Band Historian for 1 Year
4 years of It's Academic/Quiz Bowl ( Captain for three years)
4 years of Young Democrats (President for 2 Years)

Can someone chance me on getting in if I apply for the priority deadline. I would like to go to the University of Maryland Smith college of business to get my degree in information systems

27 views and no replies, please if anyone has any advice on whether I can get into UMCP and/or recommendations of other colleges I might be able to get into, I would really really appreciate it.

So I’m a senior in high school from OOS who was admitted to Smith!

Caution 1: From my experience, UMCP doesn’t have an exact science that will get you into a certain program, semester, etc. I had friends with slightly more competitive stats yet I got into Fall admission and they were offered Spring.

Aside from that I think you really need to improve the GPA. Challenging schedules are really nice to see, but my admissions counselor told me that Cs in AP classes aren’t As or Bs in regular classes. I’m not really sure what are good and bad SAT scores because I’m from the Midwest and we use ACT. Try to get your score towards the higher end of their mid 50%. IMPORTANT: if the SAT isnt working for you, I strongly encourage you to try the ACT. Many times students do significantly better on one versus the other.

I also suggest you to be involved in ECs, but don’t try 20. If you have work experience at one place for an extended period of time or have a couple clubs that you’re president or have some other leadership role in says a lot and greatly improves your chances at getting into an LEP like Smith.

Lastly, the UMD application is very heavy on writing. This year there were ten short answers, two essays, and an activity resume. When speaking to my counselor she told me to be honest in the short answers. They look to those as to find something unique about a student. For the essays I answered one of their questions but I also created my own. Sometimes creating your own really speaks a lot about your passions, interests, and is a really good gauge about you. The activity resume was FANTASTIC because it allows you to thoroughly explain what you do and why you are involved. It’s really your chance to make yourself shine and really works to your advantage. DONT BLOW OFF THE WRITING BECAUSE IT WILL HELP YOU!!!

I really hope I helped! I spent a lot of time speaking with my UMD counselor so feel free to pm me with more questions. I wish you the best of luck.

Sidenote, if you’re looking for business you may want to try to apply to Indiana. You sound like you may qualify for a lot of their academic scholarships and depending on your rest scores you may be offered direct admission to their business school, Kelley. Indiana is a great school with a top ranked business program and it may even be a nice back up for you.

Again I hope this all helped!

Thank you so much. I was actually contemplating Kelley but it was ranked higher than UMCP and I didn’t think I could get in, but if you think I can get in, I will look into them even more. One thing about Indiana is that I’m asian, and I noticed that Indiana was about 4% asian which kind of scared me. I don’t mean to insult anyone who might be reading this from indiana, but going to a school that is really white kind of scares me. Will I fit in? Also, are there any other schools that you think I might be able to get into

Answered all your questions in a PM I think? If anyone else has questions I’d love to help!

I also looked into the direct admission into Kelley and I don’t think that will happen because my class rank is top 30-35%. I know this sux but it’s because many kids at my school will take easy classes get As, and have a 4.0 GPA

Does anybody else have any comments on my chances of getting into Maryland Business

anyone???

Honestly? I think that with 3.1 unweighted and a class rank in the fourth decile, you’d have trouble getting into College Park, let alone Smith, even if you were from Maryland.

Not what you wanted to hear, I’m sure. Sorry.

Your weighted GPA might save you. You are taking a challenging course load. 1240 SAT is within range. If you can bump it up to the high 1200’s, you have a decent shot.

Just got SAT score from June. Math: 710, CR: 670, Writing: 570.
Math + CR = 1380…Total = 1950
I’m not good at grammar, but I think my 2 part score is good. Will this boost my chances of getting into UMD

Also, I’m doing the Young Scholars Program there this july will that help at all

1380 is excellent. You should make it in. UMD doesn’t factor in the writing portion. How did you do with your GPA this spring? Did it go up?

no it stayed the same

C+ in BC Calc and AP Chem

At least you are taking challenging courses. That works to your favor.

yeah i’m hoping 1 AP sophomore year, 4 APs Junior Year, 5 APs Senior Year will help

Yeah, 10 APs will definitely help.

Just thought I’d let you know that your GPA isn’t going to kill you, but you should definitely try to have only one B in your mid year report next year (though that may seem hard considering your past grades, it’s only two quarters of high grades and then you have a bit of leeway to let them slip a bit). My freshman GPA was a 2.85 because I never did any work, but I changed my ways and had a 3.5 when I applied in November and straight As on my mid year report. Granted, my SAT was higher than yours, but yours is definitely good enough to get in. Also, you seem to have tough courses and a fair amount of extracurriculars, so I think the worst that will happen is getting Spring admission (that happens to a lot of kids with lower grades, as far as I can tell from the kids at my school).

Also, I think you’ll be pleased to know that my brother, who was even more of a slacker than I was through high school, not only got in with a 3.1-3.2 GPA and ~2000 SAT, but was admitted straight into the Business School! He had played soccer for four years, was SGA treasurer, and had been working for 2.5 years, but that was about it. Oh, and he did Young Scholars and made sure to get an A and make a good impression on all the CP people he met. Last month, he graduated with a double major in Business-Finance and English and I think his GPA was above a 3.5! He’s heading off to a fantastic job in DC next month. So keep your head up and work hard because it’ll be worth it in the long run!

wow thanks a lot ameliab12. and yeah i’ve been getting that from a lot of people that I need to do really well first semester next year. If I apply November 1st deadline do they still see my 1st semester grades tho
