I'm a senior in Rhode Island going to a really good public high school and I have the following stats:
GPA:3.1 out of 4.3 (Got B's and mostly C's junior year which is why I'm scared I won't get in.)
Took pretty hard classes throughout my 4 years and have taken 2 AP's, World History and Government. Got a C in Gov and B in World History.
Was on tennis team all 4 year and am the captain this year.
Also did theater for several years, freshman and sophmore year was in the production both onstage and off.
Have done various volunteer assignments, mostly working with animals, because they are my passion and I want to have a career in animal welfare.
I have ADD, which wasn't diagnosed until right before junior year.
SAT score: 1900/2400
Kids from my school have gotten in with 1720 and 3.3 and with 3.5 and 1820 SAT as well.
I'm also planning to apply Early Action and am undecided on a major.
My chances?!

3.1 is about average, or a little less than average at UMass Amherst. There are a TON of people who’ve gotten C’s in high school at UMass so don’t worry about that. It might not be to your advantage that you got a C in an AP class, although it is good that you tried to challenge yourelf; they’ll like that. Tennis all four years is great, it’ll separate you from the soley academic applicants. Not sure how much applying Early Action will effect their decision. What’s your class rank? Exracurriculuars/ community service? Anything besides theatre and animal welfare?

Thanks so much for your reply! I don’t really have any other extra curriculars. I’m doing French club, but this year (senior) is my first year. Also, my school doesn’t do ranks. Like I said, I have a 3.1/4.3 and my school is competitive and there are a lot of really smart people. There are people applying there this year that have much better grades than me, but my SAT scores are about the same, and even higher in some cases.

Well, adding French Club (even if its only for one year) will be to your advantage. Three ec’s (volunteering assignmetns, French Club, and theater) is a good number for a state school; plus having an interest in a foreign language is always a plus. Not to be rude, but why are you applying to UMass if you live in Rhode Island? It costs about $40,000 a year for out of state students, which (personally) I think is way too high for a UMass education. It’s a good school but not nearly worth $40,000 a year. Have you looked at someplace like URI? I’m sure that’d be cheaper.

Expected major please… maybe I can recommend another school given that information.

I don’t know my major! I know I want a career in animal welfare, maybe working for an animal welfare organization. What college/major can you recommend, if any?
