My chances of transferring?

I'm currently a sophomore at George Washington majoring in Political Science (although still officially undeclared- I need to finally do that).

I went to an above average high school in the Northeast and had about a 3.45 (unweighted) had a few honors/AP classes, but nothing TOO rigorous. Graduated around 40-something out of a class out of 260+, and I think I made or just missed the top 15%. I was a bit unmotivated in high school until junior year.

*Of note, I improved my GPA every year from Freshman to Senior year, and I'm even doing the same in college as a continuation from high school.

I got a 26 or 27 on the ACT but that number is deceiving because I got a 20 or 21 on the Science portion (sorry, this way well over 2.5 years ago, so it's hard to remember these numbers). I did have a perfect score (12/12) on the essay portion however. I opted not to take the SAT.

I had a 5 on the AP US History test (the only real non-science AP course my school offered) and got a 780 on the SAT II US History test.

I had very mediocre EC's, including young republicans (with leadership positions all 3 years), won an essay contest, community service, work after school, etc. Certainly nothing special.

Now for College:
Fall Freshman Year: 3.68 (Dean's list)
Spring Freshman Year: 3.81 (Dean's list)

Fall this semester: I'm expecting a 3.85 - 4.0, most likely all A's and one A-

This means my cumulative GPA should be around 3.78-3.83 by the start of next semester.

Some EC's during college:

Freshman:
Treasurer of my dorm
Community Service (50+ hours)
2 Clubs

Sophomore
President of my dorm
Intern for the McCain Campaign
2 Clubs

My main choices are:

Georgetown
UVA
Vanderbilt
Emory
Notre Dame
Northwestern
University of Chicago

Can you guys give me my chances?

Sounds like you should give it a shot.

thats comforting :)

Can anyone breakdown my chances at the schools I'm interested in? It would be much appreciated!

And I did get a 27 on the ACT

A few of those are really reachy, not because of your stats but in general. For instance, U Chicago and Georgetown just do not take many transfers. I think you should try, but also make sure you include at least one safety on your list that's ranked about as high as or maybe even lower than your current school, accepts a decent number of transfers, and where you would be happy to attend.

can anyone give me my chances?

sorry i dont know more... but Id say you should get in to Emory. I transferred there and just finished up my first semester. Sounds like you should have a great shot. As for the others, I just dont know. Good luck!

thats good news! I'm interested in both Georgetown and Notre Dame. Does anyone know how good or bad the fin aid of those 2 schools are?

Solids shot everywhere, except UChicago. They have about a 12% admit rate. Georgetown actually does take quite a few transfers, approximately ~370 each year. I'd go for it if I were you!

Oh yeah, and are you in-state for UVA?

I'm not in-state for anyone of my choices

UPDATE: I only had a 3.84 this semester :(

how would this effect my chances?

and can anyone give me a breakdown for my potential choices?

Do some research, lol! Look at the individual sites and see what GPAs they want. Talk to some admissions officers too. Look at their rates ( I made a master list for my prospective colleges; it took me about 2 hours for 36 colleges--not too bad.)

Most of the tier 1 schools will be reaches, as yourfire_escape has mentioned, because their acceptance rate is ridiculously low to begin with. From what I understand, your HS stats won't really matter much anymore; they will focus mostly on college; but of course, they won't completely ignore the good things on your app.
