My chances of UT Engineering?

http://www.engr.utexas.edu/about/facts/programdata

In 2014, there were just 184 undergraduate students in ArchE. There were 455 students in PetE and 455 students in BME. My understanding was that BME is a “hotter” field, and more students apply for it than PetE.

@Messipass,

I was for thinking for long time that M+CR was important. But in Austin academic index formula, they consider only M + W. Ofcourse they give weightage to class rank. But no weightage for GPA or CR. With other universities it might be different.

@Messipass,

To be precise, below are the equations used for different depts.

i The equations are as follows:
Business – ACT Model
-.630 + (HSR * .015) + (ACT M * .062) + (ACT EngComp * .031)
Business – SAT Model
-2.668 + (SAT M * .002) + (SAT W * .001) + (HSR * .032) + (SAT CR * .001)
Engineering – ACT Model
-1.661 + (ACT EngComp * .045) + (HSR * .020) + (ACT M * .060)
Engineering – SAT Model
-2.254 + (SAT W * .002) + (HSR * .023) + (SAT M * .003)
The Liberal Arts Group – ACT Model
.125 + (ACT EngComp * .046) + (ACT M * .046) + ( HSR * .007)
The Liberal Arts Group – SAT Model
-.285 + (SAT W * .002) + (SAT M * .001) + (HSR * .009) + (SAT CR * .001)
The Natural Science Group – ACT Model
-1.179 + (ACT EngComp * .052) + (ACT M * .051) + (HSR * .017)
The Natural Science Group – SAT Model
-1.617 + (SAT Math * .003) + (HSR * .020) + (SAT CR * .001) + (SAT W * .001)

You can clearly see that Engineering SAT model uses only M + W, no CR.

@kiriii,

I think international students has very less seats, but less competitiion too as very less number of people apply from outside. OOS is relatively very competitive as so many within US targets Austin. I saw some statistics in the range of 1800 SAT from Qatar getting into cockrell. Not just one, several such statistics for international students. If you comb the admissions thread you will find, particularly close to the date when bulk of admissions was released.

@midclassdad‌ that is so weird, never heard of colleges looking at M+W. Where is the equation from?

@Messipass,

It is from official document on how they decide. They have academic achievement index and personal achievment index. The above formula is for Academic achievement index. For personal achievement index, it is holistic approach(no set formula). They plot each student in this graph to decide cut off.

@midclassdad I still xan’t believe it, its good for me cause I can usually score 700+on W, but still all the good college look at M+CR , and my councelor said that UT looks at M+Ct

@Messipass,

If you are international student, check admissions thread close to 22nd Feb. So many like you with much lesser stats got into Engineering. I can remember at least a few.

International students competition for US is generally for Masters as BS is way expensive for outsiders.(It is expensive for Out of State people like us). Third world countries can’t afford it for most part and european countries have decent universities giving education free of cost. So only people from few countries like Qatar has money power and do not have great local education. They will apply.

So you stand a very good chance.

@midclassdad‌ Im not sure which category I fall in to, because I think I fall in to the In-state applicants rather than international

@Messipass,
For in-state also competition is less as most of seats are reserved for in-state. So either way you are in better position.

@midclassdad‌ Good to here that! Thank you so much
