I’m a international Student but, I am qualified for in-state.
I go to small private school.
Currently, I’m a junior, and here are my spec
I want to get in to Petroleum or Chemical, Aerospace, Biomedical, Electrical, mechanical hopefully
SAT
770M 650 CR 660 W
I am taking it again and try to get 800on math and 700+ on writing
ACT
never took it officialy, but on a mock test got 31(24English, 35Math, 32 Reading, 34 Science)
SAT 2
800 Math, 720 Chem
Planning to retake chem and take physics
APs
Chem 4
Our school have like5 AP classes and only 2of them are engineering related, Ap cal ab and chem
So I am taking AP Cal bc exam with a public school this may, and confident of getting 5.
School
WGPA 4.01 GPA 3.9-4.0 I think
No rank, but since there are only 70kids in our grade, I am not in top7%
I usually take all AP or honors if possible, except for english.
Soccer Varsity (area champion 1 time, all district 1time)
Football Varsity
Student of the Year for World Geography
@MyLonghorn Sorry with many questions, I just remembered that I have only taken 2years of Spanish and planning to not take the 3 since the new spanish teacher is just bs. Would it affect the admission big?
@Messipass … i don’t know what specific major you will be accepted into … You look like a pretty solid candidate for petroleum or chemical… your Mat SAT is pretty high ., and they look at Both I’m pretty sure. so you look competitive and i doubt taking and extra year of Spanish makes a different… unless its AP spanish then it may give you a good amount of credit
@Messipass Remember that international students have much higher competition due to limited space by law. Cockrell is already a competitive school; this is compounded by not being an in-state candidate. Also remember that you can only apply to one major (with an alternate - although they are moving away from seriously considering the second one you choose,) and not just Cockrell in general. While your profile does fit the general in-state student, I think as an international you will have trouble getting into the most competitive programs at Cockrell (ie Petroleum.) I would make a serious decision for what major you want to do over the next summer, and try to get some more extracurricular activities under your belt. Best of luck on your test retakes, and best of luck applying next year!
@kiriii thanks! Some say that int students have lower competition, and some say higher, kind of confused. It would be the best case if i get in to PetE, but I would still be very happy if I get in from Elec, Mech, Chem, Aero, Archi, Biomed. Do you think I stand a chance in the list above?
Im planning to apply PetE for A&M since its a little more easier school I guess??,
Im just getting paranoid thinking about choosing eithet UT or A&M and choosing what engineering I want to do(If i even get in to)
It’s harder to get admitted as an international student.
ArchE is the hardest engineering department to get into. BME is also very competitive.
You really need to think about which engineering field you want to be in. They are very different! I was an ArchE major - I would have been miserable in ME or Petroleum.
@kiriii Oh, and what kind of EC should I work on?or would you recommend?? I go out to Korea during summer and in here, I live with a host family with another 3 kids, so they hate if i do some extra activity,.
Forgot to mention, I scored 207on psat and im in NHS if it helps. Again thank you so much
@MaineLonghorn ArchE is the hardest?? I always thought PetE was Cockrell’s most competitive department. Now Im really worried about being an international student,
Anyway, Im not really interested in specific Eng, cause I like them all. I wanted PetE cause the money is there. So what would you recommend for 1st and 2nd choice? Do you think I still have the chance to get in to Cockrell as int student?
THANK YOU SO MUCH
@MaineLonghorn How do you figure ArchE is the hardest? I’ve always figured PetE would be the most competitive!
@Messipass NHS is excellent. Just find things you enjoy doing that either may be related to the field you’re interested in, in my opinion. The experience is useful for helping decide a major, and can be useful material for your application. I wouldn’t recommend picking a major based off of money - all engineering majors have good money potential anyways. You seriously want to pick something you enjoy - you’re smart enough that you probably could take on any program you wanted to, so you get the benefit of choosing. So seriously, this summer, even if you can’t manage to do much vocational-related, put in research into every field of engineering you’re considering. An extra $10k starting salary (or whatever) isn’t worth hating what you’re doing. You have a good chance at Cockrell - just push yourself to figure out exactly what you want to do, and try to get any experience possible you can with it.
@kiriii, my dad is an engineering professor at UT and told me that. Keep in mind that ArchE accepts fewer than 100 students each year. BME is also small and very competitive. Petroleum is definitely not as competitive as those two disciplines.
@MaineLonghorn PetE only accepts around 100 a year too, and is supposedly 2nd in the nation… I didn’t realize about ArchE, but I think they’re roughly comprable even if PetE may be slightly less.
