My chances on escaping nyu stern ;)

I don't like Stern's curriculum, its teachers, or its students and I want out. I'm looking at several places (e.g. Columbia, Yale, UChicago, Penn, MIT). I'm also considering an internal transfer. I would greatly appreciate it if you guys could give me my chances at getting in at any of those schools (its a tough list, I know). Here are my Stats:

Sophomore @ NYU stern
Double major in math and finance
HS GPA: 3.63/4.00
NYU GPA: 3.7/4 (2 Bs first semester first year, all As the next, mostly As this semester)
University of Washington GPA: 3.86 (summer school and during senior year of HS)
SAT: 1470/1600: 750 CR/720M
SAT II: Physics: 740; Spanish w/ listening: 740; Math IIC: 800
APs: Bio(5), Calc BC(5), spanish(5)

ECs:
Intern at a Hedge fund
Member of Beta Alpha Psi(business frat) (incl. Community Serv, social, etc.)
Quantitative Finance Society
Investment Analysis Group
NYU ski/snowboard club

...a little wall street heavy, I know

HS ECs:
Volunteered at a day labor center
Lacrosse
Exchange programs in Ecuador and Mexico
Cello(12 years)
Trombone (4 years)

Misc:
I have some decent digital art/photography I could use in a portfolio

Essay: I have some pretty compelling reasons for wanting to pursue a more enriching education, but I don't have any sort of amazing story to tell.

Essentially, I like math, comp sci, and spanish/latin am studies. Most of my courses pretty tough math/business classes.

I know I have a pretty tough list, but I don't want to leave NYU go to a school with a worse math department; I'd rather just transfer internally if I couldn't get in anywhere else. I need to decide whether to apply or not, and where, because while I want to leave Stern, my parents aren't to keen on me transferring to normal NYU (go figure). And even applying to transfer makes figuring out my living arrangements for next year difficult (e.g. I can't sign a lease on an apartment until after I receive my decisions).

Please guys, help me out with this decision. Do you think I would have a chance at Yale, columbia, u chicago, penn, or mit?

I greatly appreciate any responses.

-happy holidays

let me preface this by saying that you are obviously a very very strong student...however most of the schools you are applying to accept less than 10% of their incredibly qualified applicant pool and im not sure i see anything in your app. that distinguishes you from everybody else...a 3.6 in hs and 3.7 in college are solid, but probably below the average accepted gpa's of all of the schools that you mentioned...your ec's are pretty standard, i dont see any leadership roles or anything that would scream "world beater" and allow you to crack yale and columbia's 2% xfer acceptance rate (wharton i believe is 5%)

always worth applying though...perhaps you have an outside shot at a couple of those schools but if you really want to escape stern you may want to add some safeties and matches to your list

I agree with dufflebagjesus, you simply don't have anything that makes you stand out. Stern is an excellent school anyway. People who transfer usually win awards and lead campus organizations.

yah. to be honest, i don't really want to leave nyu, just stern. An internal transfer would be just fine by me.

Just for discussions sake, if I had a 4.0 would that cancel out the importance of all this leadership mumbo jumbo?

cancel it out? well admissions doesnt really work like that, but a higher gpa always helps your chances

what dont you like about stern? would you be a business major at cas?

dufflebagjesus, the hedge fund internship actually kind of caught my eye (although, it depends on what kind of work it entails I suppose). What do you consider to be "world beater," if not something like that?

again, we are talking about transferring to yale and columbia here...both schools reject 49 out of 50 applicants, most of whom are obviously exceptional applicants...an internship for a business major to these schools kind of seems pretty standard, imo.

NYU's business program is ranked significantly higher than Yale's, for whatever that's worth. You should consider adding Cornell, Northwestern and Duke to your list. Maybe even USC if you wouldn't mind moving to the opposite side of the country, ha.

NYU CAS doesn't have a business major, at least not according to this NYU > A & S > Majors and Minors it does have a major called Economics and Mathematics which I'm guessing is what you'd like to switch into. I hear internal transfers aren't hard to do if you have a decent gpa. Going from Stern to CAS is probably not that hard to do with your gpa.

thanks for the vote of confidence aerialblue, but the internship is a pretty normal for sternies. We all have to play the game ;)

@dufflebagjesus
to answer your question, I don't like Stern because its a business school. Too bad I didn't really fathom what that entailed before I chose to go there. I thought Stern would be a great place to pursue my interest in finance/economics. However, its only good for people who's only expectation of their education is a high salary upon graduation. However, I am actually interested in stuff. The sheer number of really boring (to me) requirement courses really irks me. It feels like high school all over again. Also, I feel that the classes themselves give only a superficial treatment of the subject. Its not a very quantitative curriculum.

The bureaucracy is huge nuisance as well. I had to go through a massive amount of redtape just to become a math major/transferring credits. If a transferred to CAS I would keep my math major, and pick up a major in Comp Sci or maybe Spanish. No thank you to any more business courses.

from a potential internal app. at nyu-

your credits at stern i assume will all transfer to cas? would credits earned at gallatins?

I’m actually in a similar situation as you. The only difference is that I’m a freshman, and am really displeased with the Stern curriculum. I’m a double major in mathematics and finance too, and really want to get out of Stern and go to a school like Columbia or MIT. Let’s say I get a GPA of somewhere between 3.6 and 3.7, and am also the founder of a fraternity in NYU, would that make me competitive for admissions into the schools the OP wants to get into?

grey: Yale doesn’t even have a business program for undergrads so *** are you on about?

You really need to lower your standards, I’m sure you have a good shot at an internal transfer but you really need to be exceptional to get into those schools and, as much as I hate to see it, your application doesn’t look to be too exceptional at the Yale/Columbia/UC level.

The kids who transfer into those schools have truly incredible academic records or a very unique hook.

NU, UVA, UCLA, WUSTL, UMICH might be schools worth looking into with much more realistic transfer rates.

Just my thoughts, good luck.

I didn’t know that…I’m not anything close to a business major - no need for obnoxiousness.

wow. You post in a thread you know nothing about and then get your feelings hurt when someone calls you out on it?

With all the hand-holding and keyboard-jockying that goes on on these forums this happens way too much.

If you think that YOU hurt my feelings, then YOU are the one on some ****, my friend.

There are ways to call people out on things. This:

is typically frowned upon.

Get a life, loser.

Ugh feel the flexion of my e-muscles.

Looks like a lot of people are looking to leave NYU Stern… myself included.

I am currently in the process of transfering to NYU Stern for the Fall Semester. I was wondering how high my chances are of getting into Stern. My information is as follows:

Current University: Georgetown University
High School GPA: 4.5 weighed, 4.0 unweighed
College GPA: 3.874 (4 A’s and 1 B+)
Courses Taken: Humanities & Writing, Calculus I, Financial Accounting, Introduction to Sociology, Theology (Problem of God), Theology (Theological Implications of the Holocaust), Managerial Accounting, Introducation to Psychology, International Business, English (The English Renaissance)
SAT: 660 Math, 570 Reading (not too happy with this score)
Recommendation: From English Professor who did his Masters at NYU (since they only ask for one recommendation from Transfers)
Essay: In my essay (which I am still in the process of editing) I am discussing the reasons why I want to leave my current university, which are mostly personal reasons, not to mention Stern will provide me with a better education in my intended field.

Based on these facts, do you think there is a good chance of me getting into Stern? Georgetown is a pretty challenging, not to mention prestigious, university, but I think that Stern would be a better choice since their Business School is ranked higher.
