I also have a serious medical condition that limits my physical mobility.

What do you think my chances for a scholarship are? And when do they announce the National Merit Scholarship thing?

Please respond!!! :) Many thanks.

I think you have an excellent shot. did you take the GCE "O" levels or the "A" levels? I an referring to what you said here:

"GSE Examinations" High Honors: First Year Algebra"

None of the ivies give scholarships. You don't have the type of ECs that usually mark a Harvard or Yale admit. You will be competitive at the other ivies.

Zagat, you are right. The ivies dont give scholarships, but they do give alot of financial aid. Out of curiosity, where did you apply to? Dis you get any response?

oh its no problem lol

good luck with school, you're doing better than me lol...

I went to Williams. 20 odd years ago!

I think you do have a good shot at any of those colleges (including Harvard/Yale). Your academic record is really good and you hold many leadership positions in your ECs. Also, you have received many awards, and your PSAT score is really good! You won't get any merit scholarships to the Ivies, but you should-like most people-receive financial aid. Oh, by the way, the amount of years you have been playing golf (seeing how it is probably your main EC) will also affect your chances a little.

"Most" people do not recieve financial aid at the ivies.

Wow, thank you so much for replying; it really helps :)
RE: GSE; these were the Golden State Examinations (for California), not the GCE. The GSEs were discontinued after 2002 (bugdet cuts).

Zagat, what are the type of ECs that usually mark a Harvard or Yale admit?

I haven't applied to any schools as I am junior in HS. But I figured I should start thinking about this now.

Thank you so much for your input! Hope to hear from you guys soon!

For HYP admits you will often see awards at a national or international level, clubs/services they started, lead and have spread far beyond their own school and the like.

Thanks Zagat :) I've been reading some other posts/threads and it looks like there are a lot of people who have better/more eye-catching ECs/awards/activities than I do. Do you guys have any suggestions as to what other activites I should pursue?

Also, what colleges do you think I have an 80% (or better) chance of getting accepted?

Thanks again! :)

Fair chance at UCB, UCLA, and Cornell. The rest.. shrug

Based on your stats only, you have a shot. If I were you, I would start thinking about the essay because the essay is a big factor in admissions, and it may be the factor that helps you to get in.

The problem with these admissions is that with HYPS and some of the other Ivies as well, you don't exactly know what they're looking for. It's all a matter of fate, really.

By "fair chance", what do you mean? "Fair" probability of rejection? Hmm, I guess I better spend the summer and what remaining time I have "beefing up" my resume. I do live in Japan so I guess I try to becoming really good at Kendo and Japanese flower arrangment. And, I'll probably go enroll in some community college program.

you live in japan? haha.
what stands out most about your stats is your psat. 232/240 is extremely good.. you will recieve nationalmerit for sure. so if you do just as well on SATI/etc.. then yes. UCB / UCLA is a sureshot. cornell is probably a sureshot as well.

Yep; Japan is a really nice country to live in...only everything here is really expensive. What costs 30 bucks in the states will cost 65 here. Thanks for your input once again :)

I guess I should just stick to the UCs and forget about the Ivies. I've been looking at some other ppl.s' stats and they're way more impressive and unique.

just apply to ivy's anyway... if there's even a small chance you might get in i think it's worth applying, imo

Well, there's the cost of applying to consider as well. I'm not the richest kid in the world but I'm also not the poorest. I float around in the middle. And with the UCs, one application fee will allow you apply to as many UCs as you like (or so i've been told).
