applied for pre-med with physics as a major

Seems like you are within range with your stats. My D also applied and had her interview for the Trustee scholarship yesterday. She loves this school (is in her top three). I hope it works out for her that she gets in and that she gets the scholarship! Good luck to you too! It's a LONG wait for HWS. I think that will be the last one my D will hear from!

My son is a second year Physics major at HWS and loves it there. This year he is living in a theme house and enjoying that too. The college is simply a very caring and warm place to be. Tomorrow for instance there is gathering at a house on campus for the men of Hobart where the Hobart Student Government and the Hobart Deans will host "Coffee with the Deans".

It is very easy to get to know the deans and your profs.

When he has a question, he emails the prof. and typically gets a message within a few hours.
Lots of opportunity for paid summer research, internships etc. There are also compensatory funds for students wishing to take unpaid internships too.

Wow thanks for the info. What is theme housing? If you don't mind me asking what are your sons plans for when he graduates, does he want to teach or attend grad school or something else?

My son is presently interested in the Dual Degree Engineering program HWS has with a few choice colleges. He is interested in the Dartmouth program. His interest is environmental engineering. HWS has a bunch of houses they own that are themed; they have a specific purpose ie. environmental, religious, subs-free, conservation, asian etc. Typically a 2nd yr student applies to as many houses as they want and waits for a response. My son was accepted into 2 of the 3 he applied to. Each house is given a budget to spend and his house is a co-op where all the students (12) take turns cooking a big meal with everyone helping. The house usually plans events that have to include anyone on campus who is interested. He is very happy and HWS owns quite a few nice looking homes on the perimeter of campus that they take care of. There are still quite a few students who live in the dorms which are nice.
I see your name is premed-is that what you are thinking? They have a nice program there.

Thanks for the info rubyred. My D applied and is very interested in the architectural studies major. She is an artsy kid and her only concern is if HWS is too athletic for her. Is there alot to do on campus on the weekend? How large is the drinking scene? The school is high on her list. Guess we won't know if she is in for a awhile.

We read on the parent's forum that some parents have received a request for a parent letter of rec. We haven't received a request so wonder if this is a bad sign. Or maybe they ask for this for Trustee scholarship finalists? Anyone know?

Yes, rubyred, I want to do pre-med but I love physics so I'm majoring in that, rather than the traditional biology. My parents received a letter for a rec as well but I don't think they are going to do it. Do you think this will be detrimental to my app? They're both really busy with my siblings and work. Another school I applied to wanted one but my mom didn't do it and I still got into the Honors program with scholarships.

Applicantmum77 I applied for the Trustee scholarship. I sure hope the only kids who get the letters requesting parent recs are the finalists because that would be good for me. But it took a while for it to come so maybe that's it.

My son has a friend who was 1 yr behind him in high school that is presently in the arch program. He is enjoying all of it. It is tough though. There is alot of artsy stuff on campus; many students go that route for a major. You can always catch some sort of exhibit and speaker most days. As far as the athletic scene-it is there to a moderate degree but by far not the biggest scene. My son is not into the sports thing and still finds tons of stuff to do. There is always a game going on on one of the fields. The drinking scene is present but the kids typically have their group they may party with and there is no real pressure to do it if you are not into that. My son is a non-drinker and he has said there are always groups on the weekends that have been drinking but he has made so many friends that don't drink that it is a non-issue for him. I was worried but not anymore. When my son applied we did not get asked to write a rec letter but I would do it.
My son applied for the Trustee Sch but did not get it however they gave him an equal amount in grants from the college so therefore it wasn't an issue.
HWS is a college with alot of alumni ties that bring in a nice amount of $ for shc and such. last summer son applied to a summer research position on campus (10 week @ $10/hr)and was offered the position. He was one of the very few freshman to get an offer; but I told him to pursue it if that is what he wanted and it worked out. They give free room for this on campus. HWS is always looking for students to start something new and creative on campus and they stand by them with help if need be.
On the weekends, there is alot going on. Some kids take advantage of the mini-trips the school sets up like going to a Buffalo Sabres hockey game in Buffalo on a bus (cheap) to a daytrip to one of the malls in Rochester. There's lots of activity at the gym/fitness arena and tons of kids work out, run etc-guys and girls. They just expanded the hrs of operation during the week to 1AM. Most of the clubs meet during the week and there are quite a few. Typically Fridays you can find a speaker in the library, maybe a concert, or comedian on campus. There is such a variety of activities; my son noticed that there is not any one specific activity that is typically loaded with kids b/c others are going on.
HWS is a very close knit community where kids seem to be open minded and caring. They are in the process of instituting a 'bike-program' (where the school purchased a bunch of bikes, painted them the colors of HWS) and students can use bikes for campus travel, drop them off when done at areas across campus for another person to pick up and use. It's pretty cool I think.
I am very happy my son is there, it is not a radical college but a nice mix. I also feel he is very safe.
He feels most kids are extremely honest and thoughtful. ie.-he lost his watch and thought it was a done deal till someone posted online that they had found a watch and asked anyone to email with details. It turned out to be my sons watch and the student kept it safe till my son could stop by his dorm to pick it up-and he did not even know this person. That's very nice.

premed123-just fyi. Not many students are Physics majors so you really get to know your profs. You are invited to their house for BBQ etc. Presently, my son is taking Thermal Physics where there are only 4 students in the class and he knows 2 of them very well from previous courses. If interested in learning more about the Physics program, Professor Spector is the man to email. He is my son's advisor.

I got accepted to the school but rejected for the Trustee scholarship. I did receive a Faculty scholarship but I don't know for how much yet. Thanks to everyone who posted

This is incredibly frustrating! I thought I had a pretty good shot at the trustees scholarship, but I still haven't heard back. Should I be worried? I hate posting stats, but I got a 1450/2180 on my SAT's, class president, MUN, Envirothon, audition choirs, 2 jobs, currently going to community college and high school, 4.0 GPA, science awards, university biotech internship... etc? Premed had great stats, but maybe the trustees scholarship is way more selective than i thought. Should I call and ask? Argh this is annoying... advice would be appreciated!

You definitely have a shot because your GPA and SATs are higher than mine. Also you have great ECs. It's probably taking longer because you are a strong candidate for it. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get it

I didn't get it either, so don't worry about it. I got a faculty scholarship and a grant, but it' s still not enough (HWS is really expensive!!) so i think i have to appeal my offer.

Holy cow, if you didn't get it, I would like to see the students who DID get them! They give out like 80, right? I figured since its a small school I would have had a chance. Oh well. At least we got something :/
