My Chances

Hello, I’m new here and probably going through the same process as all other applicants. Anyway I go to a public high school in Pennsylvania and I have had my eye on Boston University for quite some time. My SAT (all on one test) are Math: 660, Reading: 600, Writing: 670 overall a 1930, with an ACT composite of 28. My gpa…is not so hot. I have an 87.6 (I’m assuming that’s a 3.4 give or take). So if anyone could give me some insight as to my chances that would be great. Thanks.

sorry, forgot to include SAT II's: Math I: 680, U.S History: 520. I have a good amount of extracurriculars including breast cancer and ms walks, st.joes hand in hand program, a few clubs at my school...

With those scores I think you would be offered admission to CGS, not the various colleges.

hmmm...I'm assuming the university would decide which school I could possibly get into? Or is that determined by my intended major?

You'll most likely get into one of the main colleges, not just CGS. Your 660M is much above BU's average Math SAT and your CR is write in-line. Not sure why earlier poster thought you'd only get into CGS!

Thanks for your answer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

the 520 on the SATII U.S History is kinda low, maybe you should take it again

...yes I know. But i submitted an act score too. Would admissions look at the better of the two (I'm assuming the act score of 28)?

well the average act score is 29 so you definatley have a shot.

mind chancing me?

good luck!

You're fine, just relax and take it slow. You fall in the accepted average statistics that I have seen so just relax. Keep in mind that BU has a very high acceptance rate because it is such a large school. I believe that out of 16,000 applications, they have accepted nearly 8,000 in the past (someone please correct me if that statistic is wrong).

So you have a shot, and that does not mean you might get in, but you have a fair shot. Your SATs are good, you're GPA is not all that bad. I'd say that you have a very high chance of gaining acceptance. Good luck, I am a prospective student like you, too!

Thank you both amieptl and abkid91, it tough to gauge where we all stand. I wish you all the best of luck!

Actually, they fairly consistently accept approx. 58% of their applicants - so if they receive 16,000 applications, they admit @9,500, with the hopes of eventually matriculating @3,700. Pretty decent odds considering it's a really good school!

your statistics look fairly strong, don't worry you'll do fine

jeez, everyone is so harsh in the forum! you'll be fine.

have you considered taking the math iic? that seems to be your stronger area looking at your other scores... i found it alot easier than the math ic.

where else r u applying

PA2009 -- did you hear from Penn State yet? STILL waiting here in MA -- ughhh!!!

I really think you have a very decent shot at BU -- keep in mind they accept 58% of applicants -- you'll be fine.

No, I haven't heard from Penn State yet. I'm assuming our decisions will come in January...I know the wait is extremely painful!! Are you applying to BU as well?

Yup - ED at BU, but if that doesn't work out, Penn State's next choice. Is PS 1st choice for you?

I reaaaaally want to go to school in Boston. I'm sure you feel the same way. I would be extremely happy to get into either BU or PSU so it's hard to say whether or not I have a first choice...I guess I'm a little superstitious too. The good thing is we have a set date for BU's decision. Can't wait until Monday!!! Good luck to you btw for both schools.

Oh, I didn't realize you applied ED to BU -- I know the waiting is a killer!

We live in the Boston area, but living "in the area" and living "on Comm. Ave. in Kenmore Square" are two totally different beasts -- it's a really great area -- safe, convenient to everything, and a 1 min. walk over to Fenway Pahk!

What school did you apply to at BU? Are you from PA? Took son down to visit Penn State last April vacation and he really liked it -- it's amazingly huge! Pretty area though, but getting back to Boston is not that easy -- I know you can fly into State College connecting from Philly but it's pretty pricey and I don't think I'd be making the 8 1/2 hr. drive down there more than the drop-off (which is probably why he likes it so much -- too inconvenient for me to get to!).

Anyway, maybe they'll let everyone know today -- the Admissions Office says you'll first find out on-line because they post on-line and mail the letters on the same day.

I wish you the best of luck -- remember to post as soon as you find out!!
