My confusing parents.

Hello I am new to this website but I need serious help. It feels like I’m stuck between two rocks crushing me the closer I get to my graduation date. On one side its my mom, who is so enthusiastic for some reason about my graduation. Doing things like paying for so many extra and non important things for graduation but I’m more relaxed and just waiting to walk across the stage and get my diploma. She would constantly yell at me for not being so excited about my senior year but lately all that matters is just getting to college for me. My dad on the other hand is like me, not that excited about this and just waiting for my school year to end. But lately he’s been so bossy about where I want to go to college, may I add I’ve been accepted to a college in Tennessee and right now I live in Florida. I’m still waiting for the college in I applied to in Tampa, Florida but its like he is so stuck on me going to Tampa. What I’m trying to say here is that how do you manage in situations were both parents are just making my senior year way more stressful than it has to be and get them to just hear me out and listen to me. Anyone’s opinion will help.

        Thank you

I’m only a sophomore but I’ll try to help.

You should talk with your parents (respectfully but truthfully). Maybe have a little “meeting” with both of them about how they’re making you feel stressed out about senior year. And if not your parents, talk with your friends or maybe even your guidance counselor about this.

I hope I could be of assistance

Thanks @The5458Captain‌ I have a pretty cool guidance counselor so that could be an option. I guess I’m just so blind sided on how my senior year was the most stressful out of all of them, and its not even from school itself. But I will try to talk to them first and see.

@chearia80 Happy to help! I hope everything goes well for you!

Can you Parents afford to send you to that College in Tennessee? How much would it cost per year for Tuition, Fees, Room and Board? Maybe what your father is concerned about is the family’s ability to pay for your College degree outside of Florida or even Tampa? Has that ever occurred to you? Did you apply to USF and if not, what other colleges did you apply to within commuting distance from your home?

Do you have other siblings that will be going to College in the next 2-3 years? If money is not an issue, then there might be other issues that your father is concerned about.

Psata82 The tuition is not a problem for my dad, he knows how much and acknowledged the price. And also I received a scholarship from the college in Tennessee that is yearly. Yes I applied to USF and was denied ( the decision kind of hit me hard). I have no siblings and my dad is close to retirement. Recently my family went through a rough patch. It seemed like my mom cares too much and my dad cares too little and I’m the middle of all this, and its driving me nuts. I recently applied to FAU and FAMU. FAU didn’t go so well and I’m waiting on FAMU. Only thing about FAMU was that it was a last minute college which I did not have any interest going to, my older cousin is an alumni from there so I gave it a shot to at least to get accepted to one college. I completely understand my dad might be very cautious about his daughter going so far away, but may I add I’m very mild mannered and never been a ‘wild child’ of some sort. Its just kind of funny because I’m thinking about the US Army being an option also and when my recruiter says she has a chance to be sent to Germany to work in a hospital it did not phase him one bit lol. But please give me some advice it will help so much.

Oops sorry I didn’t tag @Psata82‌ still getting used to this website.

@chearia08: Have you given any thoughts to going to a local Community College for two years and then transferring to one of the State 4-Year institutions. That might be a better option than FAMU or the US Army. A lot of students are using this option these days to minimize their overall tuition cost/debt load. Community Colleges do not have the stigma it once had 5 - 10 years ago. In Florida, once you complete your AA degree you are guaranteed acceptance into one of the State Universities. This option is also very popular among Nursing Students (and other majors), given that they can complete all their Nursing Prerequisites at a Community College at a cost of about $105 per credit, which is less than half what the cost per credit is for the 4-year Universities and in most cases, do not have to pay ~$10K/year for Room and Board.

May I ask what will your College Major be? What did you mean by FAU did not go so well?

@Psata82 I need higher test scores for FAU (which I’m taking my ACT this coming up Saturday). And I have considered Community College, only downside is that I’ve learned that to get into the physical therapy program there is very competitive and I highly doubt I will get in. And another downside is that I will be staying home for my first two years, which my mom or I don’t want. Its nothing wrong with staying home for two years but in my family it seems to my mom that is not a good idea or “bad luck” because of my family’s past choices with giving up a school away from home and staying at home. And at the same time my mother is not that comfortable with me staying in a apartment my freshman year of college, if I choose to go to a community college. The US Army is still a option in my mind or at least the Reserves, throughout my high school years I’ve been considering the military and took the initiative to prepare for it the best way I can.
