Parents Dislike Your College Choice?

My mom is really supportive of me with wherever I want to go to college for the most part (except she doesn't like me looking at all girls schools, but that's the only restriction on her side). My dad, however, is huge on me going to a nearby school in state. I tried to mention to him the other day that I was starting to look at out of state colleges as a possibility in my college search and he immediately told me, "Well you know you won't get Bright Futures there.." then went off telling me about how horrible out of state college would be for his finances (my parents are divorced and he earns all the money so he would hate having to spend it on my college.) Just, my family struggles financially and with Bright Futures, I'd get 100% paid tuition plus being close to home. My dad was very happy with my older sister because she went to a college 5 minutes away from his house so travel expenses aren't that bad plus she earned 75% Bright Futures. I've tried a few more times suggesting that I was looking at out of state colleges but every time he shoots it down by listing all the financial costs of it, but I'm not very fond of any Florida colleges.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my dad to listen to me about out of state colleges or have stories of their own about families discouraging them from their college choices?

You should ask this in the parents forum, you could get some very interesting perspectives there.

My parents are kind of the same way. I want to go (and I've been accepted) to the University of Chicago. But my parents don't really like Chicago, and I'm not sure how the financial aid will work, so they'd rather I go to the community college. Whatever. I've tried to compromise by applying to the better schools in Ohio, which are really safeties for me, but I wouldn't call them crappy schools.

Basically, the only thing that works for me is to just tell my parents to shove it. I've tried all the rational negotiating and explanations that are humanly possible, and they don't work. So one night during dinner I just went on a tirade about how crappy the community college is (and I provided evidence) and how good other schools are, and how my job prospects greatly improve (and I'd be happier) if I went to a four-year university. I recommend speaking so quickly that they can't jump in with other arguments. Of course, you should try to negotiate first, but frankly, your dad probably won't change his mind. Maybe you could show him with brochures how it can be just as affordable to go out of state for college.

Good luck! You'll need it.

Ugh...your post exactly describes my troubles. I have always wanted to go to a private school, but my parents, despite making a huge amount of money, consistently claim that I will not get a better education there, and that they can't pay for it, when they clearly can.

The only thing my parents dislike is the price of the colleges. D:

I need big loads of Financial Aid.

Yep, mine too.

It's more of my aunt and uncle for me. (I live with parents but aunt and uncle have a more direct influence.) Aunt is kind of, go ahead, do what you like. My uncle wants me to stay home and go to the local community college (Gag).

No one is willing to pay my way at all though. They'll pay my cousin's since she's a screw off and wouldn't have gone (although she dropped out) but not a cent of mine.

lulz, totally the same thing with me. They were expecting me to look into places that are like $8,000 a year, but most are in the upper 30 to mid 40 thousands. Grr.

You should get them to visit these places, and look into some of their top programs. If you show them how good it is, they'll have nothing to diss besides the campus, which isn't all that impotant.

My parents don't want me going anywhere more than 3 hours away, because "they don't want to drive there." So, any OOS college gets an automatic "NO."

My Dad would be ashamed of me and would not respect me as an adult and would probably think I'm stupid if I didn't go to an Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford. I don't know what it is with these Asian parents. Not all of them are like this, but a lot of them don't know a thing about colleges and think any college that they haven't heard of sucks, when in reality, they can count all the colleges they know about with one hand.

Thing is...they're expecting at least 20-25k in non-loan financial aid.

They want NO loans for college...because Med School will be hell.

ah...my mom is 100% supportive of me, whatever i do

my dad is very prestige-obsessed as well...he wants "the best" for me because 'i deserve it'. I understand that argument, but I'm not sure if "the best" will a) take me or b) is "the best for me"

my parents support me going to art school, my mom's only thing is that she would rather have me go to risd(2nd choice) than sva(1st choice) because sva forces you be very specialized if you do photo, but it isnt a huge deal. lets see if i can even get in to risd. my parents are both really into the idea of following your passion.

my parents actually dont care that much i guess..they really know nothing about most of my colleges, they can name maybe 3 of the places im applying to , but when i say "waht about the cost" they just say "it doesnt matter we will do wahtever we can" which is crazy considering they make a combined 51k a year...

ahah yes!

I'm always looking at colleges in large metropolitan areas (NYU,Columbia, UChic, Emory), and spread out all over the country.

My dad wants me to go strictly to an ivy, and my mom insists I stay in the tri-state area, and attend school in a boring suburb.

2009 is going to be a very interesting year for me

I always love how people refer to the tri-state area. Do you have any idea how many tri-state areas there are in the US?

well the tri state area is generally around NY..

tri-state area = NY, NJ, CT

my dad hates that i picked harvard because it's far far away from home but that's what i intended to do.. go as far way as possible and you have to say Harvard is a good school
