My courses requirements to get transfer at UCB ? ?

MAJOR :CS

Okay i am not into any college yet but planning to go to a community college then get a transfer

so i kinda decided to go to foothill, but when i checked assist.org and it says i need :

COMPSCI 61A The Structure and (4)|NO COURSE ARTICULATED
Interpretation of |

Computer Programs

COMPSCI 61C Machine Structures (4)|NO COURSE ARTICULATED

COMPSCI 70 Discrete Mathematics (4)|NO COURSE ARTICULATED
and Probability Theory |

i can get 61C done from Diablo valley college (idk the process of taking classes at other CC works ? if you can help me in that too i will be thankful :’’) )

I searched so many threads all of them says ask your counselor around or call the respective university i am trying to get into
or search of courses which matches with that course

IF you guys can help me a bit like who got transferred who knows a lot in this ?

I am obviously planning to go to foothill and then get a transfer.

I am gonna be an international student in foothill (want to save money :P)

I haven’t transferred to Berkeley but I’ve applied and currently awaiting results so I’ve been thru this whole process. I’m not gonna be able to tell you where exactly to take those classes, so you’re gonna have to just look thru all the schools within your area and see which ones have em. But if Diablo Valley College has them, just go there. Comp Sci is prob the most competitive major at Berkeley, it had like a 5% acceptance rate last year for that particular major. So it’s absolutely important that you get all those major courses done. You can switch between whatever schools while you’re in community college, it doesn’t matter. You just have to report every single grade you’ve ever received at any CC when you do the application. Saving money is important, but if you really wanna go to a school as competitive as Berkeley you’re gonna have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get in there.

@ericbadmon Thank you so much for the reply , yeah i searched a lot every community college is missing COMPSCI 61A course in california, please let me know how your application goes , Diablop Valley college is missing 2 course if
compared to other CC’s. Ucb comes in top 5 colleges in world for CS major , i am gonna keep UC davis/UCSB as my back up (TAG)

@Fortyamit Hmmm… it may look like you may have to find a college out of state and take the course there
JK lol if it’s not articulated anywhere in California I’m pretty sure they’ll just let you take it at UC Berkeley after transferring. Lemme see if I can find a CS major and tag em to have their insight.

@Fortyamit Hey so I checked the UC Berkeley website for CS and this is what it says:
“You will be able to declare Computer Science as your major when you complete your remaining technical prerequisites with a Berkeley grade point average of at least 3.30 in the 3 prerequisite courses (CS 61A, 61B/BL, and 70), and complete the application form required by the department”

So based on the language it seems like they’ll let you take those courses there?? Cuz I’m assuming when you transfer to Berkeley, you’ll be pre-CS not CS declared. Then you take those classes in your first semester to declare your major. But I’m not 100% sure on that you may want to check/post another forum

Here’s the link of where I found that BTW:
https://eecs.berkeley.edu/resources/undergrads/cs/transfer-prereqs

Actually yeah that makes perfect sense on why those exact 3 courses wouldn’t be articulated. I’m almost 100% sure you can take those courses at Berkeley since you’ll be Pre-CS. I’m just not 100% certain cuz I’m not a CS major myself but based on the information in front of me, it seems like you’ll be fine

@ericbadmon Thank you so much for replying on my thread my doubts are almost cleared
I am gonna take Diablo valley as it has better CS courses and only 2 are not articulated and for one of them i can get an alternative course , on the other hand i can attend one more class at Laney to get another One done : ))

lets see how my next 2 year goes
thank you so much man

Actually the 61B class can be articulated at a community college. They will look for both a Data Structures class and a C++ class. I’m not sure what the numbering is for other community colleges, but at Ohlone, it is CS 124 and CS 116.

My kid has already taken both of those classes, so he can bypass the CS 61B class at Berkeley. However, should he happen to screw up his other 2 classes, he does have the option of still taking the 61B class in order to get to the 3.3 GPA.

@ProfessorPlum168 Yeah I’m assuming there are CCCs that have em, but it’s just pretty rare. That’s prob why they’re letting students take em there. This guy said he couldn’t find any college that has those classes within his area, so it’s prob best for him to just plan to take em at Cal. Idk if it makes you any less competitive tho, I’m not a CS major so I have no clue… I do know it’s super competitive tho, maybe the most competitive major at Berkeley

@Fortyamit Good luck man. CS is super competitive and I don’t envy your major at all hahaha. Try to do whatever you can to get straight As and join a CS-related club or something. Don’t go to crazy on the ECs to where it’s getting in the way of your academics, esp. for your major. They don’t care AS MUCH about ECs for us transfers as they do with incoming frosh.

You can find UCB CS 61A at Laney College CIS 61. Also has UCB CS 61B.

You can find UCB CS 61C at Diablo Valley College COMPSC 260. Also has UCB CS 61B.

Foothill College does not have that good coverage of UCB CS prerequisites.

Note that L&S CS is not direct admission; you still need to complete the remaining of CS 61A, 61B, 70 after transfer with a 3.3 GPA or better to enter the L&S CS major. The EECS major is direct admission, but requires more (science and math) prerequisites before transfer.

If let’s say you take 61A and 61B, then your admittance into CS would be based on one course, CS70? Could be risky. If let’s say you got a B, you are out. Unless they let you take the CS61A and/or CS61B class again.

Yes, L&S transfer admits are taking a risk with grades in the needed CS courses taken at UCB after transfer (which may be just COMPSCI 70 in the scenario in reply #12).

Here is a possible way to mitigate that risk with L&S CS: suppose you attend Laney College and complete the CIS 61 (= UCB COMPSCI 61A) and CIS 25 + 27 (= UCB COMPSCI 61B) there. Then in the first summer, take CS 70 at UCB. If you earn a B+ or better grade, then that will mean the prerequisites are fulfilled with a 3.3 GPA in courses taken at UCB (of course, transfer admission is so competitive that it is better to have an A or A+ grade to maximize chance of transfer admission in the first place).

Or, if you do not mind taking extra physics and math prerequisites, apply to EECS, which is direct admission to the major if you get admitted.

thanks man i am still confused like a lot xD , crime rates near diablo valley and UCB are pretty high too well as compared to UCLA

one b and i am out ?
