This is weird as most parents try pushing their kids to STEM however my dad won’t let me be an engineer. Im a sophomore taking advanced chemistry and pre calculus and aspire to be a mechanical engineer. However my dad himself an engineer with a PhD doesn’t think I can handle MechE (pr any engineering for thst matter). Even though i am taking and succeeding in advanced stem classes and doing well on my math tests my dad still had doubts. I think the main reason is because I hated my math teachers in 8th and 9th grade so my dad thinks I hate the subject, even though math is my favorite subject. I try explaining to him but he just doesn’t listen. He keeps pounding me to be a lawyer or banker, I think next year is the make it or break it moment as I will take ap physics 1 and calc bc as a junior. How can I persuade my dad that im fit for engineering and still remain cool with him?
Continue to take the STEM courses that interest you and continue to get good grades in them. Let the evidence do the persuading. You have plenty of time before applying to college for him to come around.
“I’ll think about what you are saying,” is a great response. It doesn’t commit you to anything but lets him know he has been heard.
