I just got back from visiting JHU and Duke. I was thoroughly impressed by JHU, but I don't think that it is complete enough academically for me. I really do love Duke. So, now the decision comes down to Duke vs UM. I'm doing BME/biology and premed at this time. However, I'm not set at all. I have a 20k per year sship at UM, and none from Duke. Any advice?

lol...ummm....20K at UM vs Duke...come on now.

I turned down dartmouth (unwillingly) b/c UM gave me 20K a year. I think the decision is pretty obvious. Look forward to meeting you this summer kiddo.

KB

Let's just say that it's much more of a feat to be offered 20k/year to michigan than it is to get accepted to Duke. I'm quite envious of the offers you and kb received and they really shouldn't go to waste. I guess it comes down to feel, but I haven't met anyone that didn't like michigan's feel enough to want to pick Duke over it despite extra money to michigan. I assume you've visited both places, so you know what each is like. Usually i dont say this, but dude, just go to Michigan. You'll be glad you did.

My brother is a doctor at the hospital at Duke, went to Med School there and he loved it. I'd take U of M for undergrad, and you can always go to Duke for your graduate studies!

I'm not sure what atmosphere at Duke is going to be like for the next couple of years. Ordinarily, I would say that if money isn't a problem, go to Duke. It's supposed to be one of the top schools for BME. But you can get into med school from Michigan and if money is an issue, then go to Michigan. You might also try negotiating with Duke. Their yield is bound to be affected by the scandal.

totally depends on whether you like football or basketball better. you should base your decision entirely on that

oh god wolverinefromchi...that comment just made me get a headache..and you are from the chi area too. smacks head I'm so embarrased.

I think it was sarcasm, but that would probably play a big role in my decision also.

I am certainly leaning toward UM at this time. I really feel that UM will give me a chance to excel and be very competitive come med/grad school. It seems like such a remarkable transformation for me since Nov. when I was accepted. At the time, I couldn't have ever imagined myself at UM.
I've actually only visited Duke. It appears that race relations at both schools might be a problem. So do you honestly think that asians will have no problem hanging out with whites, hispanics, and blacks at UM? Or do asians tend to stick to themselves?
The problem is that I love college bball every bit as much as college fball. Furthermore, it seems that UM bball is on the upswing and might be very competitive in a few years. Nevertheless, sports-wise, I'd be very happy at both.
I have several other concerns as well. How do you think my research/internship ops will differ between DUke and UM? Also, how does campus/social life match up? Lastly, it might appear that I might transfer into the engineering school to study BME. Does that mean I will lose my LSA sship? Can I double major in BME and Biology to avoid this?
I would also like to ask you what your favorite thing about UM is and what your least favorite thing is.
Thank you all so much.

Well, Michigan basketball is far and away better than Duke football, whereas Duke bball is slightly better than Michigan football. And yes, I honestly believe Asians will have no problem hanging out with black, white, and every other kind of student here. At possibly the most diverse student activity on campus, Freestyle fridays on the Diag, there are regularly white, black, hispanic, and asian students all freestyling and it's all love and beautiful.

Go do Duke! I know kids that would KILL to go there. It's a better school. It's worth it, you like the campus. You can always transfer to Michigan (don't know if you'd still get $$$ as a transfer student), but you can't always transfer to Duke.

ummm clearly i was being facetious

i do definitely think that a schools' athletics play a role in the college decision for non-athletes... it is an indicator of what type of students you will meet on campus, and how much pride they have in thier school. i dont necessarily mean how good the team is, but rather the level of student interest in the schools' athletics

in my book, duke and UM both rank very highly in this, though i'd take great football and decent basketball over great basketball and crappy football anyday

though that doesnt mean if i got into Duke and UM, id pick UM. very tough decision, especially if you feel yourself at home at UM like you say you do

lol...jeez! I was kidding too....a little bit. O:-)

If its an LSA scholarship, you'll need to stay enrolled in LSA. They aren't gonna pay for you if you transfer to engin.

Michigan will cost you $20,000/year compared to $45,000 for Duke. Is there a reason you are still reflecting? Ask your dad to buy you a Porsche 911 with the $100,000 you will be saving him! LOL Or maybe your dad could just pay for your medical school.

I'm guessing it would be dumb to ask people whether they would choose UM paying $0 or Duke...
:{

Update: I have settled on UM!!!
I Will be a WOLVERINE next year!
I'm extremely happy with my decision, even though it was difficult to turn down my other three offers.

Hey man congrats! I think you made a good choice....you really couldnt go wrong. I will be joining you come august...cept those bastards at the LSA honors are making me pay the full $40000.

Good work.

As a third sport, you can't go wrong with UM hockey over Duke lacrosse.

Maguo al Wolverine? "Angels and Ministers of Grace defend us!" LOL Just kidding dude. Welcome to the family. Trust me, you won't regret it.
