I am going to just cut straight to the point. I am an undergraduate who had only finished one semester of college and had to drop out because of poor grades.

My goal: to transfer from Georgia Perimeter College in Atlanta to Middle Tennessee State University Fall 2013.

I have looked at the requirements of MTSU for admission. They say that if a student has a GPA under a 2.0 and they are admitted they will be admitted on probation.

My question is should I try and apply to transfer to MTSU with my GPA as is or should I try Summer School and then apply?

It would probably be best to do summer school then apply. You could always apply now though, the worst they can do is reject you this once. You are allowed to apply to schools again if you’re rejected.

I might suggest going to a community college and taking a lighter load. Lets say, 4 courses (12 hours). Take 2 that are general studies: math, English, etc. If you’re bad at math (etc.), take a literature class and basic math, for the other 2, take subjects of interest and or classes that you failed at the current university. The best way to raise your GPA due to bad grades is to repeat those courses and do better. Focus and slow your thoughts down.

Summer school might not be a good route to go, being as you failed courses. Class work is going to be more hectic and you’re going to have to cram 3 (ish) months into just 6 (ish) weeks. You might want a slower pace to get back on track.

I have been in the same boat as you’re in. Slow down for now and do it right. Know your professors and go to tutoring. There is nothing to be ashamed about, they may have an easier way of showing you how to do something that you’re not familiar with.

Just curious, but why an out of state school? Gtech transfer requirement for instate residents isn’t that high. 2.5 iirc. I used to live in Ga for a little while, i wish i had residency there so i could go to Emory or Gatech.

I would recommend raising your gpa before you transfer.
