Im starting to think Im not good enough for the usafa. Im a good “qualifier” but im not that good (except for my amazing ec’s) like for instance my stats are:

-3.5 gpa 3.9 weighted gpa (all AP/honors) go to IB school
eagle scout
-civil air patrol
100+ hours of c.s
SAR
LeadAmerica conference in wash. dc
2 varsity letters 1 in wrestling 1 in track
NHS

plus tons of other crap like piano lessons, being a page for weldon (my senator)

anyways ive talked to guys with 3.2 gpas who got in and ive talked to 4.0 who have got in. Ive talked to 3.2 rejected and 4.0 rejected. Its all over the place. Im just a little confused as to what they are looking for exactly.

Heres a description of me:
Im a good person with alot of character ,physically fit, and im very smart IQ wise but sort of lazy academically.

You are kinda in the same boat that I was/am in. I had about the same qualifications (Similar Academics, Eagle Scout, NHS, Varsity Athlete) and I didnt get an appointment for this year. I originally thought that I had a very good chance of getting in, although I did have some stuff that stood in my way.

Do not discount your chances at all though. I would say you have atleast a pretty good chance of getting in. With good interviews, a decent fitness test and good ACT/SAT test scores, I would be suprised if you did not get in.

The worst that could happen is you reapply after a year of civilian college and/or do AFROTC.

wow. somehow I dont know why but you just shifted my perspective on the my issue. Thanks for giving me your advice. I deeply appreciate it. btw what happened to your admissions? where are you now? did you get in? just wondering.

Well if you're willing to give up before even giving it a chance, then you most likely won't last there anyway. You really can't tell what your chances are until you apply as everyone's story is different. If you are really dedicated toward going after it and it is your goal, you will do whatever you can within your power to get in - if it's meant to happen, it will happen. Otherwise, you'll just sit around not doing anything wondering if you really would qualify, which serves no purpose. /my blunt 2 cents

don't get worried, apply, like spot said you can always apply again if you have to. I think you look really good, except for the GPA and I dunno about SAT/ACT scores, your record is better than mine was and I made it in. plus, if they don't think you're quite good enough, but still good, you might get appointed to the prep school, which is a good thing to go to

UNCYNICAL I can see why you thought I was giving up. I never meant to make my passage seem like I was whining or anything. But in fact, im quite tough and never give up in anything I do and people see that in me at school and at home. Yet, you spark up a good point about how the statistics of people not getting in is due to there non-dedication. I will never give up on my dream as that is how I feel.

Yes, futureusafapilot, you should realize that the best thing you can do for yourself is just apply and find out. Like everyone has said, the stats can go either way...a lower gpa can get accepted over a higher, lower sats over higher, etc...I was crossing my fingers every day just to get in at all, and I got an LOA in early December...still quite possibly one of the best days of my life...so, you will never know, and thats rough, because if your like the rest of us, you really wants this....however, just keep doing what your doing, go to the seminar (thats big), and have an alternative, and just find out what happens!

Well heres the story. Back when I first applied last year, I basically though I was Captain America, so I applied to West Point, Navy and Air Force. I honestly thought I would get into all three. Well I soon found out otherwise. I really wanted to go to both Air Force and Navy, with Army being secondary.

I made the decision I would later regret by applying for a nomination to Navy from my congressman and Air Force from my one senator. Now I realize that Air Force is the only place I should have applied. Plus I was medically DQed at Navy for my eyes, but not at Air Force or Army (go figure). Well to make a long story short, I didnt get either nomination, or one from my other senator. So I was sitting around on about January 14th or so, without a nomination and no chance of going to a service academy. I got a call from my congressman's service academy "person" saying they could "give" me a nomination to Air Force if I was interested, which I was. So I finally got a nomination.

As of right now I am sitting without an appointment. Im going to spend atleast one year at the University of Illinois. I fully plan on only reapplying to Air Force next year, and I am making sure to pull out all the stops. Thats basically my story, without the details left out.

FutureUSAFApilot, all the feedback on your thread is very accurate. I am assuming your request for an application has already been sent.

I strongly urge you to set earlier deadlines than what is in print. My son seemed like he had a very slim chance of an Appointment from USAFA or USMA. He also applied for both Army and AF national ROTC scholarships. He was also competing with two other applicants from the same HS (one was ranked in the top 3). My son's GPA at the time was only 3.66 and ranked 95/438. His test scores were nothing to brag about. I told him he needed to get everything done before the end of summer. Sometimes he was "grounded in his room" until form "X" or essay "Y" was completed. He took care of all the DODMERB appointments and gathered requested medical documentation as well. I knew that once his Senior year started, there would be very little time to add more to the mix. I also pushed him so that he could enjoy his Senior year. I have suggested this tip on other threads over the past 9 months. When he sent letters requesting Letters of Recommendation, he clearly stated the official deadline however, asked the writer to send their letter back to HIM before the end of July 05'. He included a SASE with our address for the writers convienence. I've been called "controlling" (not a nag) by my kids. That's OK with me, throughout the application process my controlling nature was the kick in the butt my son needed.

Stay focused. Take the SAT and/or ACT a few more times. My son's last test scores (Oct 05') were his saving grace. Since his scores jumped up so much, he e-mailed everyone that might have some influence on his nomination to take a second look at the newest scores. He was offered his Appointment on Dec. 15, 05'. We were ALL caught off guard.

Never give up on your dreams. You have a lot of folks on this forum cheering you on. :)
