My Dream School- Chances at UNC OOS?

I am a Louisiana resident beginning the application process.
UNC Chapel Hill has an amazing Speech Language Pathology program- my major. It is also gorgeous and I would so LOVE LOVE to go there.

But getting in is an issue.

What are my chances, honestly? All advice is SOO appreciated.
ACT 34
GPA 4.0 unweighted (4.6 weighted)
Only Ap's I have taken (taken lots of gifted classes):AP Physics
AP Calc AB next year
4 yrs Spanish
4 yrs Talented Art
However, I took the AP test in English Lang (3) and APUSH (4).

I am in the top 10 of my class of 600ish.

Extracurricular's:
Varsity Cross Country 3 yrs, girl's MVP and 3 mi record holder
NHS
Nat'l Hispanic Honor Society (Historian 1 yr)
Key Club
Quiz Bowl
Pres. FCA (1 yr)
Mu Alpha Theta
Best Buddies (1 yr- special needs kids)
Tennis- Coach's Award

Also, a couple of question's:
1. Which ec's would y'all put down?
2. Should I put down things from freshman year that I don't do anymore (SADD club, Swim Team, Track ((sophomore year)))?
3. Should I put down that I was on the youth leadership board at my church if it was 1 yr (junior), but not senior yr? Would I have to differentiate?
4. What if my family and I volunteered two summers at the Special Olympics (only 1 day per summer, but an all day event?) Should I write that somewhere?

Do I have enough?

Also, I think I might (hopefully) get National Merit Finalist. I got a 213...

Help the little girl! Am I hopeless?
THANKSS!!

Make sure that you maximize your chances by applying at the earlier date (November, I think, but I’m certain there are others here who know better than I do). There are some scholarship opportunities that are only available, or more available, if you apply early. Then, if you are invited to a scholar’s day, make SURE you attend, even if the trip seems expensive – many folks who know more than I do have said that you have a much better chance of a good scholarship if you attend.

My S received an excellent OOS scholarship with ACT, GPA, and class rank similar to yours. It’s always hard to say how EC’s and essays figure in. Make sure you do whatever you can to make your essays as good as possible – have a few trusted folks proofread for editing, but be sure to keep the voice your own (is this so obvious that it’s stupid for me to mention? if so , sorry).

Don’t worry about paucity in AP’s, but do try to emphasize commitment and passion in your EC’s, like the consistency you’ve shown with Spanish, art, and sports. Also, try to emphasize the competitive academics, like quiz bowl.

This is just my gut reaction to your stats – I don’t ordinarily participate in chancing, because I don’t think I know that much about how it works for the masses. I just know a few things that seemed to work for my son.

Good luck!

Thank you soo much! Good advice, especially about attending the scholarship day. Does your son like it there?

Oh, also, do you know if he mentioned anything about UNC or the programs he was applying for in his essay?

Thanks again!

Anyone else have suggestions?

I think you have a very high chance and if you know that UNC is your #1 choice then apply as early as possible. Show plenty of interest and write amazing essays.

On your essay question about the special olympics, if you decide to write about it make sure you focus on your commitment to service. I wrote a similar essay last year about a service opportunity and expanded it to encompass how I would like to perform similar service while @ UNC. Just a thought though.

yeah you seem like a great candidate for UNC. I think you’ll get in as long as you do what everyone else says and apply early. heck, with your record, i feel like you could be doing better than unc. but please come to unc!

What is SCHOLARS day? Is it special at UNC. How are they about out of state students. Scholars day,is there a ACT cut off (I have 32)…debating to take it again senior yr. 34 math/36 reading (english was lowest). 4.6GPA, 30 out of 818. AP Scholar with Distinctions probably in Aug. 3- 5’s this year and 1 4. 1 AP Freshman/Sophomore year…got 3 and 4. Probably taking 5 APs senior year.
