My Dreams of getting into Tisch- Shot? 1 % get in

Hi guys.
I read on collegeboard.com that only 1% of students with 2.5-2.9 gpas get in.

I attend a top highschool in the country, Brooklyn Technical Hs.
My GPA is 2.95 or so. Do i have a shot of getting into NYU Tisch school of film and tv?
SATS: 1350 Combined Math+Reading
APS: Didn't take yet, aiming for at least 4 on each Ap English and AP environmental science
RANk: unknown, their is about 1400 kids in my graduating class.

I will have taken 4 years of English by senior year.
2 years of normal english, 1 year of AP english language and composition and next year it will be Film & Literature.
This is my strongest subject

I will have taken 4 years of math by senior year.
This is my weakest subject.

I will have taken 7 science courses by senior year
1 year of science research, 1 year of biology, chemistry, physics, AP environmental Science and next year I will be taking AP biology and Urban planning.

I will take 4 years of history and 3 years of language by senior year.

Extracurricular

Former Secretary and now president of school's online new site and community.
191 hours as a teachers assistant at a kid's education center
175 hours for a internship where i interned at non profit organizations and learned skills and helped the community
100 hours+ at a community health center helping kids in a literacy project

Do I have a shot of getting in? I really need some words of wisdom before I decide to pursue getting in and start writing a script and begin to make a film for my portfolio. Thanks for reading!

Get that GPA as much as you can, take the hardest classes possible for your senior year, and aim for 2000+ on your SATs or 30+ on your ACTS. However, being that you’re applying to Tisch, nobody but the people reviewing your application can tell you if you have a shot or not since it’s 50% audition/portfolio. Even if you have weak academica stats, it’s still possible to get in if you are especially talented. Good luck!

lmao Chiyeung.

to be honest, though, a 2.95 is still a 2.95, even if it is Brooklyn Tech. (i’m from the NYC area, so i know how rigorous it is, but NYU’s adcom won’t really care.) what percentile does that put you in?

still, because you are applying to Tisch, the process is much more holistic than if you were applying to Stern. i think you should still apply, only because a large part of your application is the portfolio.

i would also get your SATs up.

If you have a low GPA, you need something to make you stand out. As of this moment, you have nothing grand. Your SAT score is mediocre compared to the applicants and you do not have any extra curricular that revolve around film/tv. What you can do, and what I would recommend is, IF you can boost your SAT score up to the mid 1400s for CR/Math, you can apply to CAS and hope to get into their General Studies program. Through that program, you can transfer to Tisch after 2 years.

This is probably your course/best chance of getting into NYU and into Tisch.

^ First, the General Studies Program is now called the Liberal Studies Program. Second, some Tisch Film applicants are put into LSP, though only for a year rather than two.

Wow Thanks For all the advice. I’m trying to study my ass off for June and October SATS. I think I can hit the 1400+ mark and even the 2000 mark. I also am trying to take the most ap course I can, I just got into AP english and literature and possibly AP psychology. I’ll apply for Tisch, If I don’t get in- oh well I’ll live. But I’m working on those sats right now and Aps.

I mean is it impossible for you to get your GPA up? Can’t you get a tutor? I mean if you really want NYU then you’ve got to improve your GPA otherwise I just don’t think it’ll happen.

^Well he only has one last marking period to make an impact on his transcript gpa before college look at it, and that’s not going to make a world of a difference.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to apply to Tisch? If English is your best subject, why not apply to CAS, Gallatin, or Steinhardt? Even if you’re still interested in the arts, those three are worth looking in to.

The reason I ask is because, as someone else said, you don’t actually have any arts-related classes. And for Tisch, the portfolio is a big factor. That means that your numbers might not be as determinative of your chances, but if you don’t have anything for a portfolio yet, you probably won’t be prepared in time to apply. I realize that’s a very pessimistic viewpoint, but it might be better for you to focus more on your stats and apply to, say, Gallatin instead.

dude 50% of it is your portfolio. So depending on what part aspect of film and tv you wanna study work on it. If you get your gpa above 3.0 and make a banging as movie, you have a chance. For tisch film, even if you have like 3.8 gpa but a horrible movie, you are not getting in. It is a “art” school afterall
