My extracurriculars stink?

I'm currently a Sophomore - because of family obligations my Freshman Year, I was forced to babysit everyday consistently from 2:30 to 6pm, making it impossible for me to do extracurriculars. However, I no longer have these responsibilities, and I'm actually involved now.

I feel like my EC's are lacking... big time.

I'm in my school's Gay/Straight Alliance, and I'm President, very passionate about the club, despite not being gay myself.

I'm also in Key Club, (a community service club) to which I'm also passionate about, however, by accepting an officer position, I forfeit my ability to accumulate community service hours...

I also babysit weekly - and over the summer, I volunteer at this Math enrichment program at my school, where I tutor middle schoolers.

I know that quality is better than quantity, but I still feel like I'm not as involved as I should be, especially because I aspire to go to a University with some prestige.

bumpitybumpbump?

EC’s are not based on the amount of clubs, but more of what you do in them. It is fine if you are a part of 2 clubs only… if you are very passionate for those two clubs. For example, if you sign petitions and send them to Congress in the GSA, you are working hard. For example, I am the captain of Quiz Bowl and plan to create a Film Club as well as volunteer at the hospital and the library. If my Quiz Bowl team gets first place in the county and I am able to get like a million views on my short film, that will be much more impressive then say being a member of the NHS of your school and “tutoring” in Tutoring Club.

For Key Club - I volunteered to lobby for signatures to be sent to Congress to increase funding for Alzheimer’s Research (the signatures consisted of those suffering from Alzheimer’s, caretakers, and family members of those who died of Alzheimer’s) . But it was only a one day affair, and overall, I only got around 30 or so signatures, so I’m a little weary as to whether or not I should put small, less significant details such as that on my application.

I agree with GiveMeReason.

Also, you can put babysitting down on college applications as an extracurricular activity! It shows responsibility! :D

What you should do is take your Key Club and volunteer at an elderly home for people with Alzheimer and raise money for such. Anything that involves helping someone is need is always good.

These are all solid ECs preamble1776… Don’t worry!

Volunteering to lobby for signatures seems very impressive.

Side note: Check out scholarships for LGBTQ students and their allies; There are tons of scholarships for straight students who advocate for the rights of their LGBTQ peers!
