So my bestie is going to William And Mary for accounting...but about a week she got in some trouble when the english teacher decided she made up books and quotes for a research paper and made her see the couselor and principle and put her on academic probation and gave her a day, roughly 24 hours to prove otherwise. She went back to the library and proved in the 24 hr window that she did, in fact, site real sources in the correct MLA format but the teacher said that she could not conerence with the principle and dean/counselor. Two weeks later after repeated petitions the teacher finally talked to the other 2 administrators and decided that it was too late, that two weeks had passed and she would not even get the half-credit for proving her sources that she was initally offered. She had an A, but that dropped her grade to a D which is probably the best she can hope for (maaaaaybe a C) because the year is nearly over. The teachers response to my friends continued petition was "well, you initally said you were going to community college and you can still get in with a D" (this is to a girl who has never gotten a C)...

Im taking her to lunch friday but I dont know what else that I/she could do...Im thinking about having her aappeal to the counselor one on one because my counselor rocks and thats all I can really think of.

what's with this teacher? I'm so sorry for your friend, but common sense probably says she should talk to her counselor, the principle on her own maybe, and if nothing improves inform the college about the whole ridiculous situation. Doubt she'd get rescinded for what seems to be a misunderstanding, she obviously didn't plagiarize or anything.

Go to the superintendent since hes on top of the principal. Bring the counselor, parents. Threaten to sue. If nothing else works, get the media. But its probably fine since she already got in.

Agree with the advice to bring in the parents ASAP.
I don't think I would let the grade issue slide...if she is going to a community college, she will need to reapply in two years and her high school transcript will still matter.

Yup, parents, to principal, guidance, head of department, teacher, anything. Parents have amazing power in schools, I find, especially when the student is, in fact, correct.

I had to deal with something similar. I encourage you to work with your child to review options as your child understands them. Then make an appt with the teacher-and go up the 'food chain" of command to sort this out. Time is of the essence. Keep records of days-time-who you spoke with. I had to use all of this to support my DD's case.It was resolved-but it took a lot of work on my part, as well as some uncomfortable moments for my DD.She graduated valedictorian of her class-G'luck!

My dad would probably scare the crap out of that teacher. Normally I deal with it myself, but when the teacher starts making patronizing comments like "you said you're going to community college", I call in my parents.

call the media. call the family lawyer. actually, ask the lawyer to call the school and yell at them. this worked at my school, this kid had a terrible math teacher and the school wouldn't let her switch teachers, so her mom asked the lawyer to call the office and leave a voice message threatening to sue the school district. needless to say, she got a class switch.

Yeah, call the aprents as a last resort. Whether or not the college changes its desicion, its still a huge matter of pride. The teacher must be a real *** to do that though...
If you really are agianst the parent thing, I would suggest a student protest/petition. When out principal fired her 64th teacher in a 6 year period, the entire student body had a walkout which was in the media.

Threaten to ruin your teacher's life like she tried to ruin your friend's. There is a plethora of methods available these days - media, lawyers, etc.

Parents go to school to see principal

Parents go meet/call superintendent

Parents call up lawyer and threaten to sue

Once in school, I got accused of hacking into the schools network and retrieving usernames and passwords of all students, teachers, administrators, network administrators, etc... and they told me I was going to be charged with grand larceny for stealing "intellectual property". I was ****ed. I did no such thing. They heard a student mention my name during an investigation, the student said I might know how to do it but wasnt sure if it was me. They took it as if though it was me.

I totally denied it and even submitted my hard drive to the school to prove that I didnt. (I totally wiped and scrambled before, and also added bugs, viruses, and worms on the hard drive so if they strayed away from anything the school would have been in trouble for real.) They didnt believe me but a kid came foward saying that he did it. Then they had the audacity to accuse me of actually teaching the kid. A kid I have never seen or heard of before.

They called in the school's popo, 2 assistant principals, network administrator (he had no qualifications), and my parents. My parents dont speak english that well and they just took it. The network administrator lied his ass off about the technical material. I told him and others present that he was mistaken and incorrect. They of course didnt believe me. I was furious.

So I got proof, went to the principal, and told him I didnt do anything and showed him the proof. He was skeptical so I told him I'll just talk to the superintendent, (whom I knew personally when he came to my school to congratulate me for something related to NASA) and he said okay and made everything go away. I then proceeded to ask him that I demand an apology. I got a letter on behalf of the entire people involved.
The End.

Sorry I had this in my mind for a while and just venting.

Parents go meet/call superintendent

Parents call up lawyer and threaten to sue

I would add to this list what some others have mentioned. Threaten to go to the press. And then do it if nothing is done to make this right.

Also, she needs to get way more pi**ed off about this than she seems to be. I'm a little surprised that she has let this teacher push her around this way. He forbid her to talk with the principal??? That's not within his power. This is unconscionable, and the teacher should be fired or put on probation immediately. And/or sued and embarrassed in the press.
