We don’t rank
Many don’t. I am sure OSU has a way to process you accordingly.
Which would be?
@osubiggestfan Call and ask how they assess rank. My S was admitted OOS this year with 3.7 GPA and 31 ACT. our high school doesn’t rank but OSU must look at the school profile that is sent which gives them a very good idea where you stand. My S did not even make honor society in our high school but took only honors and AP and did well.My guess he is only about top 30%. I think the good news is that they look a little deeper than rank and take into account the competitiveness of the school as a whole. There are only minor points between our top 10% and top 50% so rank would not be very telling of college potential. Your school may be the same.
It won’t help you get accepted but it may help you with merit scholarships.
I am sure it counts but my S did at least get Buckeye and Trustees scholarship without rank. He also was accepted into Scholars. so my words of advice is to just do your best!
my school doesn’t rank and that saved me when it comes to scholarships. because my school is competitive and the class size is small, I would probably be top 30% but since we don’t rank, I got the Maximus and the national buckeye when, if we ranked, I would have only gotten the national buckeye. because this is the case, seriously bolster your ACT to maximize the merit scholarships
I think it would help with scholarships, so like if you meet all the other requirements for the scholarship, there’s not really an excuse to not give it to you. But if you meet all of the same requirements but your school does rank and you don’t meet the rank requirement, they won’t give it to you.
@ncsandy this surprises me as I was told by OSU that they do their own calculations to approximate class rank for these scholarships if the school doesn’t provide one. My son attended a highly competitive hs where probably the top 3% had a 35 or 36 on the ACT. My son had an ACT score of 32 yet only received the Buckeye Scholarship. According to their calculation, his “class rank” disqualified him for the others. Fwiw, the people who answer phones seem confused about this because the young man I first spoke to said “oh yes, your son should’ve qualified!” And the subsequent person dismissively stated that the first guy didn’t know what he was talking about. Ummm, ok…
@Pbrain that’s so strange, I attend a top 50 public high school (in the USA) and would probably only rank top 40%, got a 32 on the ACT and got both the national buckeye and Maximus.
This worries me, as I will be applying here this fall. I go to a mildly competitive public high school (Top 100 in NY, top 1500 in country). There are only 280ish people in my grade, yet we probably have the most people with GPA’s over 100 (4.0+). I think maybe four dozen people have 100+ averages. I only have like a 96-97, but I’ve talked to my friends that have 99+ averages and I’ve received much better SAT scores than them.
Just to clarify, jdschooled5, my son’s unreported class rank (his hs doesn’t rank) did NOT impact his application; nor did it affect his ability to get the Buckeye Scholarship (w his 32 ACT). We were told, however, that OSU determined his approximate class rank when deciding on the other scholarships.
@ncsandy what was your UW GPA? Curious
@osubiggestfan 3.7 UW! (4.5 W)
