Ok, I was interested in either doing the Honors or Scholars programs at Ohio State. I have a 30 ACT and a 3.9 WGPA, but the problem is my class rank doesn’t put me in the top 10%, or even the top 20% for that matter. I’m just in the top 25%. I go to an extremely competitive school, and I’ve spoken to some admissions officers (including the one from Ohio State who is in charge of my region) who recognize my school district and say that they take in competitiveness of school into account for regular acceptance, so I’m not too worried about getting into OSU, but I was wondering if they took it into account for Honors and Scholars as well. Personally, if I had the choice, I would rather do the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars Program over Honors, but I was just wondering. Also, do they take into accound ECs for Honors/Scholars, or is it purely class rank and test scores? Thanks!

My brother was in your situation (when he applied two years ago), as he had a high enough SAT score for the honors program, but his class rank wasn't high enough. Our high school is also known for being competitive, and the requirement for rank was waived, and he was accepted into the engineering honors program. I believe it is purely class rank and test scores, with the class rank being the part for which the requirement can be waived on an individual basis. I would email someone at the school to make sure.

I was in almost the exact same position as you are, and I was accepted to Honors.

However, my school doesn't officially rank - that might be a factor or not.

Same as kelseyg said. Our HS does not officially rank. Students with good grades and good test scores are accepted into the honors and scholars programs. I think you are likely to be invited to join the Scholars program.

i was in the top probably 40% of my class, my gpa was around a 3.3 and i got in (i assume) on my test scores alone, but that was 5 years ago

One more question- for those that applied to scholars, my school ranks after each school year, and gives GPA twice a year. Can I use my junior year class rank, since my school won't rank me again until the end of senior year?

You can only apply with the knowledge you have available, so the class rank you submit should be the most up-to-date version of the class rank that you have.

I had to personally visit the guidance office to find out what my up-to-date class rank was, perhaps you might try doing the same...?

dd's school never releases rank and Ohio State told me they have a formula they use to give you a percentage rank; which combines grades, strength of schedule and competitiveness/difficulty of high school you attended. dd is good, not great student and probably is barely top 25%, NMSF and impressive other test scores; but friend in honors there assured her she would be accepted into honors easily.
