Hello everyone. I am only in my freshman year of high school but I really want to get in to a very good college. I am taking as many advanced classes as I can and I plan to take two math classes every year of high school until I run out. I have heard that what is really important for getting into a good college though is extracurriculars. My school has none that I am interested in though other than student council which I might not be able to join because of when the meetings are. There was going to be a debate club but the teacher who was going to run in decided not to because they are already running two clubs. The only other things at my school are French Club, Spanish Club, Key Club, and Drama. I have no interest in those things at all.
If more clubs don’t get started by next year am I doomed?
At most schools, you can start your own. See if you can do that. Here’s hoping you can
The top colleges will all say they prefer deep involvement in 2-3 ECs rather than joining so many just to pad your resume. A lot of times this means starting your own club and doing it out of passion rather than impressing others. You’re right to not waste time on things of no interest
I had the same problem, in fact my 1st high school had no ECs other than sports and band and i disliked my classmates too much to start my own thing. What i did was enroll at a nearby college and joined some ECs there. Just don’t tell anyone you’re in high school
Finally if you’re really ambitious and have a particular talent, you could do things outside of school altogether, like start a business, invent something, take up an instrument and try to win a soloist award, join math competitions, try out for some club in your nearest city (even if it’s mostly adults)
I know high school seems a prison, but it only is between 8-4 (or whatever). Don’t let them define or restrict your potential
You have a Drama Club? Drama isn’t all acting. Maybe you could find something interesting in the support roles like stage construction, lighting, artwork, special effects, costumes, makeup, finance, advertising sales or publicity.
Are there no sports offered at your school??
ETA: And what about Band?
What do you do outside of school? ECs do not have to be school affiliated at all. Look for opportunities that you can do by yourself or in your community.
Your EC’s don’t have to be school affiliated. The YMCA and 4H have programs for high school students you could get involved in. And Key Club, being a community service club, would be a good thing to do, and often the activities are varied and determined by the students involved. You could always attend a meeting of a club to see if you interested. The big thing is deep involvement as steellord123 said. Get involved in one or two things you really like and stick with them, hopefully moving into a leadership position as a junior or senior.
Start your own at school if you are interested
