I’ve typed about ten responses so far, but deleted every one of them. Have to remember I’m a Southern lady. This thread has me transformed into a 5’2 pit bull.

It’s like I said in the thread (I’m surprised you didn’t find it until now) - you just have to divorce Alabama, the university, and Alabama, the football program, as two related but separate concepts.

^^^Exactly, feenotype. Yet, astonishingly, many of these self-righteous folks, who are affiliated with universities they fancy to be bastions of intellectual superiority, cannot, for the life of them, make this facile distinction. Think we should invite them down to Tuscaloosa and have a couple of sophomores educate them as a community service project?

The funny thing is that they are able to separate athletics and academics at other schools that are in the NE, Midwest, or the West, but they have this over-reaction to anything that happens in the South when it comes to sports.

However, I really got my hair up at Mantori’s complaints. His child is going to Ole Miss. He must not have any clue about Ole Miss and football - there’s a big tradition there, too (He must not have seen The Blind Side.). If Ole Miss won a nat’l championship in any recent decade (which it hasn’t), the school would not behave any differently.

And, for him to express concern about how some perceive Bama and therefore not apply to the school, and yet have no similar concern about how some perceive Ole Miss is just ridiculous. Bama will receive twice as many applicants as Ole Miss; it did last year and will repeat the feat this year, as well.

All right, RobD, I’m married to one too! And, though she’s American, she was raised in Milano by a family from Philly, so I think we’ve got this thing covered, lol.

m2ck, how did you manage to suck me into this???

I think the point of the thread was that it is kind of crass to build a statue to a coach that’s still there, which I can agree with to a certain extent. I don’t think it’s appropriate, but I’m not gonna get my underwear in a wad over it. They shouldn’t be complaining about having statues in general though.

Most of you know my opinions of the University, so I won’t air my grievances here, especially since I no longer attend.

There is nothing crass about having a statue for someone who is still there. The statue is about winning a championship. What if Nick stays for another 20 years? Is the university supposed to wait until then to put a statue in the area where they have the statues for the coaches who’ve won these championships? That would be dumb.

I bet it’s weird for anyone to walk by a big likeness of oneself…whether it’s a picture, painting, or statue. It’s all got to evoke a funny feeling.
