My little share for Broadway lovers

I haven't really yet shared about my D's experiences so far at NYU/Tisch or in New York, though she is having a fabulous time at both and has done a lot. I gotta share soon. But she just called me, even though two hours ago, we had our "check in" every few days call. She was like, "you won't believe what just happened" about TEN times in a row! So, she says she and her roommate (also in CAP, knows from our area) and another very close male friend in CAP (knows from camp) went to try to get last min. tickets to a show. They went to try to get tickets at the box office for tonight's closing performance of Lennon. They were sold out. So, they figure they will go to TKTS for something but went around the block to an ATM machine. At the ATM machine was Terrance Mann (star of Lennon, let alone other Bdway shows) and so her friend says to TM, "we just tried to see your show but we can't get tickets...anything you can do?" jokingly and he asks if they are students and they tell him they are at Tisch and he says "come with me" and takes them to the theater. He obtains three tickets and takes out his personal credit card to pay for them (50 each for terrific orchestra seats) and says "I'll pay for two if you guys split the third ticket" and they are in shock and he gets them the tickets. They tell him they've met Julia Murney (another star of the show) who came to their camp to do a workshop with them (she is an alum....and all three of these kids went to Stagedoor) and he brings her out to say hello to them and then he says that after the show they can come back and meet them all! She is ecstatic. He doesn't know these kids and did it out of the goodness of his heart. She can't believe it. My husband calls her back to tell her that the piano player for the show is a a friend from our college days and she is like, "we're buying flowers to thank Terrance Mann now, gotta go!" She has seen many Broadway people since getting to school, as well as shows and all but this latest story takes the cake on top of others she has had so far! I am sharing it cause you can relate if you have a Broadway smitten kid, but also so some people out there know how nice a star like this can be to kids he does not know at all!

Besides loving Broadway, my daughter has always been infatuated with the sixties and the music of the era and has done an extensive independent study on this. Also, she has recorded the song, Imagine. This past spring, by sheer coincidence, her "senior" dance, a lyrical dance with three graduating seniors in her troupe were to dance to Eva Cassidy's rendition of Imagine. When my D was so severely injured in a car crash, she was out of every dance and all her performances but they incorporated her into the show by having her sing Imagine with my husband accompanying on guitar as the other two girls danced it (which coincidentally was the first day my daughter walked on her own) and so "Imagine" holds a special place.......also sang it and accompanied herself on piano at a peace activism/arts event she created and put on in our community. I know that Lennon, the show, ends with this song. I think she is gonna be in heaven tonight but then again, I think the past few weeks she has been in heaven! Thought you'd like this story. I have others to share since she got there but this one is pretty neat!

I also hope it shows how great people can be who have made it big. Recently she met Anthony Rapp (RENT, YGMCB) whom she has adored for years, and he talked to her and her CAP friends a bit, taking extra time when he heard they were theater students (they went to see him in a free appearance he did). What Terrance Mann did is quite unbelievable!

That's a great story! I agree how it is comforting to know that SOME bway "stars" don't let it go all to their head and are still good people!

Anthony did a great seminar at Interlochen a few year ago and the students are still talking about it

yeah, unfortunately i wasn't at interlochen the year he was there! (i went 03 and 04) i was there in time for Josh Groban, though!!! He did a camper chat and a concert! i got him to sign my CD cover and some lucky people with a card under their seat got to have an individual picture taken with him (not me, but one of my friends did!)....but i enjoy reading anthony rapp's quote in the interlochen catologue!

My daughter loved the show (Lennon). She said at the end of the show, they realized they were sitting next to Julia Murney's parents who they chatted with (their D who is in the show is an alum of their camp). Also Yoko Ono was sitting nearby. They got to talk with Julia Murney after the show and with Terrance Mann again who they gave a gift of thanks to. He gave the kids two pairs of the "Lennon" spectacles worn in the show! Also saw Donna Murphy there. It was a great night.

Broadwaywannabe...were you in the MT program at Interlochen in '04? I go to IAA and they told us Anthony would possibly be coming in October to do a master class and help with ARTS videotapes, and then back for sure in December to do a fundraiser screening of the movie.

Johnshuler, no I was a voice major in 04 at Interlochen. I was an intermediate MT major in 03, though. Wow, that's awesome about him going to the academy to help with arts videotapes!
